Yahoo! Sports and ESPN report that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is being treated for leukemia. My toughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Admittedly, I never was a big fan, but his accomplishments speak for themselves.

Thats to bad cancer is a terrible disease:(

Dear Penny71:
It is not totally life threatening and he is still active in his life.  He just has to monitor his condition a little more closely but he will be here for quite some time. If he does the right thing he will be here for a long time. He was diagnosed over 11 months now. He just came out to emphasize that men should go to the doctor and get themselves monitored so that they will know in the early stages of the diagnosis. In fact he still has books coming out.

The form of lukemia (CML) Kareem has been diagnosed with can be treated via medication.  Please keep in mind that advancements in our medical technologies have not progressed to the point where this terrible disease can be taken lightly.  Which is exactly what Kareem is trying to address by his statements yesterday.

My mother-in-law has been diagnosed with AML (a more severe form of the disease) on three separate occasions.  Six years ago she beat it via a cord blood transplant (acts the same way as stem cells) because a perfect adult match was not located.  This did not "take", so now she just had the BMT, because the matching adult donor was identified early in the process.
