I think it's wise to pay that much for ANY player; it's that I think that Cano is a better buy at his price than ellsbury is at 153M. i dont think paying 153M and giving a ten year contract to a young guy who has been hurt more than he has played is a wse investment; coupled with the fact that speedsters with a lot of early injuruies generally stop stealing bases young. I dont think ellsbury is ever going to hit 30 homers again
When is baseball going to implement a salary cap? Not the meaningless one they have now with the luxury tax, but a hard cap like football. The players' salaries, like in football, are all covered by the revenue sharing from the TV rights. That is why they implemented a minimum spend in baseball (see Florida Marlins). Until a cap in instituted, the same teams are going to keep winning every year by just buying the best players.
hat is the advantage the Yankees have. While they obviously do not win the World Series every year, their massive payroll gives them the opportunity to compete for a playoff spot every year. Even last year when the Yankees were inundated with injuries, they still were only around 5 games out of qualifying for a post-season spot. Most teams would not have had the resources to even be competitive with that many injuries.
Because of their high payroll, the Yankees will always be competitive. They have missed the playoffs twice in the last 19 years. That's an incredible run.
Coughing up that much for Ellsbury, then dicking around with Cno who is more durable and a better hitter? I don't get it. Do they NEED to steal Red Sox players THAT bad?
With Albert Pujols trade to LAA not panning out the way they had hoped, and after A-Rod really not marking up to the kind of money they spent on him, they had to be thinking twice before coughing that kind of dough for Cano. No matter how good a player you are, no one has had a 100 homer, 0.500 Avg year in MLB yet, and at some point, you just can't justify paying that kind of money....
Looks like, this year, they will stay below $189 million salary cap for luxury tax
