It's time for a change. Mike may very well be a great defensive coach though. If you can avoid his GAZE! LOL In his better days he had the intensity of a methhead.
Mike Singletary was fired after the Niners' loss to the Rams. San Francisco had a chance to win the NFL's weakest division this year, but never could get the quarterback position settled. Singletary's public display of affection with Troy Smith Sunday didn't help his case. Personally, I look for Tom Coughlin to be out as soon as the Giants play their final game. the implosion against the Eagles was bad enough, but they came out flat against the Packers and gave up two quick scores. After showing some life in the 2nd quarter, they went back into the tank and gave the Pack an easy win. New York leads the league in turnovers, a surprising stat for such a veteran team. Any more thoughts?
First, yes the 49er's grossly underachieved in a very weak division, but firing Singletary with a game to go makes absolutely no sense. What is the point? Let him coach next weeks game and then fire him immediately after the season. While Singletary did bring intensity and passion to the 49ers (sometimes to his own detriment), his in game strategy was often called into question. And, flipping between Alex and Troy Smith at QB was a bad move. Stick with a QB and see if you can garner some consistency at the position.
I would anticipate there will be quite a few openings in 2011. In no particular order, the following teams could (and in some cases will) have a new coach next year: Miami, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Titans, Jacksonville, Houston, Denver, Oakland (less likely), San Diego (I think Turner survives another year), Cowboys (Garrett has done well in his interim gig), Giants (I think Coughlin survives another year), Vikings (not sold on Frazier yet), Carolina, and the 49er's....That's 14 out of 32 (prob. a little high..usually the turnover is around 6-10 a year).
Now of course an unsettled Labor front could effect some of the owners decisions, especially firing coaches currently under contract for 2011.
on TV for another year. Yes, NFL owners have lots of cash, but to pay a Cowher, Grudden, Dungey, Edwards, etc. type coach big bucks and possibly not have a season--not likely.
The draft will be interesting as well if there is no labor agreement in place.
