Amare Stoudemire is close to an agreement with the Knicks. And, according to ESPN.com and Yahoo! Sports, he's trying to get Carmelo Anthony and Tony Parker to join him. Problem is that Anthony is in the final year of his contract with Denver. Denver is concerned about losing him to free agency next year and may be open to a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks.
I am not convinced even if he had been 100% healthy throughout his career, that Amare is an elite franchise player. I think he is an All Star, but not a top tier # 1 player (think franchise changer). He is a great complementary piece, IF you have that top tier player along side.
But the fact that he has had major knee surgery and a deatched retina really makes this potential signing by the Knicks extremely risky. I am not sure he is going to give them fair value for the duration of the contract. And, if the Knicks are unable to bring in another top player to join Amare, while they will be better than the last few years, they still are no where near challenging for a championship.
However, I do not blame the Knicks. They have planned for two years for this summer, and the worst thing that could happen is that they have all this cap space and no one to spend it on. The fans would be irrate. They HAVE to sign someone. If they cant get James or Wade, than Amare is the next best player to bring in.
I don't know if he met with the Lakers. But he did get tattooed at my friends shop. I think he will stay with the Nuggets. And I think that the Knicks paid way too much for Amare. But, that is just my opinion.
