ESPN is reporting that the Raiders are "on the verge" of acquiring Carson Palmer from the Bengals. Palmer has been adament that he will never play for Cincinnati again and will retire if he wasn't traded, and the Bengals have been just as adament that they would nevder trade him. If this rumor is true, and Oakland does acquire him, it would make them the AFC West favorites and could make them serious playoff contenders. The Raiders appear to have turned the corner under Hue Jackson and becoming a respectable team once again.

Well after all I'v been wrong one other time, Ok two, but the second time wasn't my fault. I consider the raiders on par with the Chargers in the AFC West. Denver isn't going to do much this year except fight for the cellar with the Chiefs, unfortunely. The Raiders are probably a serious playoff contender right now.
I guess my question is; Will Carson Palmer really make them a better team giving he has missed all this time, needs to learn a new system, has no timing with the receivers. I guess I could bbe wrong here but I would go with what I got.
They need a quarterback because Jason Campbell broke his collarbone Sunday and is having surgery. Jackson worked with Palmer at USC and the Bengals (I think), so the learning curve shouldn't be as great. Don't know why, but I forgot about the Chargers being in the AFC West!! Stupid brain cramps!! So mea culpa on that part. The Bengals would get a 1st round draft choice in 2013 and a 2nd round in 2014 that will become a 1st if the Raiders win a playoff game this year.
two of which are my fault. I saw the play on the highlights, but it didn't register. I agree, they need a QB and Palmer is probably a good choice over the backup they have. It will interesting to see how fast they can get up to speed with him.
The Raiders still might be a contender even with this QB problem.
For the longest time, Mike Brown refused to part with Palmer. He basically told him, live with the contract you signed. He wasn't going to part with his most important asset. Palmer refused to play for the Bengals and left millions of dollars (foolishly in some people's mind) on the table. Now, months later, Brown was able to trade someone who had no intention of ever playing for Cincinnati again and potentially landed two first rounder’s (one is definite, one pick is conditional) for Palmer. And, if Andy Dalton is indeed the QB of the future for the Bengals, then they made a great deal. They can use those high picks to rapidly rebuild their talent base in other areas. I never would have thought that Palmer would potentially command two #1's at this point in his career. Indeed, with OchoCinco and Carson Palmer gone, this is the end of an era for the Bengals.
Now from the Raiders perspective, this was a necessary move, but not without risk. Financially, they assume Palmer's contract (not sure if Carson would demand a new deal) and they are without a lot of draft picks (from other trades and the drafting of Terrell Pryor) in 2012. But if Palmer plays at the level we are accustomed to seeing (not the 2005 level when he was one of the games elite, but more like the 2009 version), the Raiders can indeed remain in the playoff hunt. I still think San Diego is the class of the AFC West, but Carson Palmer will close the gap. The Raiders have to make the playoffs during Palmer's tenure or this deal is a colossal failure for the Silver and Black.
the Bungals are one of the few teams who have never won a Super Bowl having more ineptitude then a team like the Jets. At least they have been to a few since the Jets last won their only appearance decades ago last century.
The presiding opinion on Mike Brown is that he is cheap. He has always been more interested in filling the coffers of his own pockets than putting money back into the team (whether that's putting money into the scouting department, coaching staff, weight room, how the team travels, locker room ammenities, etc.) Most NFL teams spend around the same dollars on player salaries (not like baseball), but its how they run the rest of their franchise that shows. That's why its been hard for the Bengals to attract quality free agents. It's why they often loose key free agents. It's why many players can't wait to get out of town.
The Arizona Cardinals used to be like that under the older Bidwell, but the son has made significant changes in improving the franchise. Now its a much more attractive destination than it used to be. Bengal fans can only hope for a similar change in fortune.
