He'll be ok.

I've heard for years that a lot of those guys make a pretty healthy living playing other pros for money on the course in "friendly" little games. Someone told me once that Lanny Wadkins made more in gambling on the course than he did on The Tour! If Rory's into that, I'm sure playing with Clarke, McDowell & Westwood will keep his game sharp. It's a whole new ballgame when you're playing with your own money.

Rory McIlroy's next tournament won't be until the British Open, to be held 14-17 July. On one hand, you could say that he's earned the vacation after his rout of the U.S. Open field. On the other hand, it would seem that time on driving ranges and putting greens would not keep his game as sharp as would going against live competition. It would almost be like keeping your b-ball game tuned by shooting hoops at the "Y" as opposed to 5-on-5 games. Of course, I'm not the sharpest tee in the  bag when it comes to golf, so anyone who's more golf knowledgeable care to chime in?

McIlroy will be fine. He will be swamped with media when he returns and at a smaller event he will be the news. Managing the distractions will be his next challenge and at The Open Championship he will not be the only story -- although he will be a large part of the story.  McIlroy showed a mastery of the five-inch course Bobby Jones spoke of; the area between your ears where all skilled performers control their destiny. Physical game is important, but blocking out all distractions and focusing on the moment and the process needed to perform at your potential is truly the key to success.  Tiger had superior physical skills (on the golf course too!) and dominated because of his mental toughness.  McIlroy has stepped in to the mental toughness arena after his Masters debacle.  He will be fine as long as he just relaxes and plays golf.
