I'm looking at the Standings on the NFL site. The AFC North shows the Steelers and Ravens both at 8 - 3. Now I know that the Ravens won both games with the Steelers this year. So the Ravens have the tie breaker. But I'm not sure if the Steelers have to finish with more wins than the Ravens to make the playoffs.
K.C. is never in the position so it has never comes up. Oh, hell, I admit I don't really understand how the wild cards work.
Now, this isn't really "Scoreboard Watching." Is It?
The playoffs consist of 6 teams in each conference. The four division winners (North, South, East, West) are seeded 1-4 based on their record. If two teams have the same record, then tie-breakers (i.e. head to head if they played, conference record, etc. come into play). Then they look at the records of all non division winners and pick the next best two teams and seed them 5 and 6. Again, if several teams have the same record, the tie-breakers come into play to determine the playoff participants. The #1 and # 2 seeds get byes (they don't play in the Wildcard round, they wait until the Divisional round). The # 3 seed hosts the #6 seed and the #4 seed hosts the # 5 seed. Then in the Divisional round, the #1 seed hosts the highest seed (i.e. the worst team) remaining and the # 2 seed hosts the other team. The two winners of these games play in the Championship game (Again better seeded team hosts the game)and winner advances to the SuperBowl. Both the AFC and NFC Conferences follow the same pattern.
The first tie breaker for winning the division is head to head. So if the Steeelers and Ravens both finished 13-3 for example, Baltimore would win the AFC North by virtue of beating the Steelers twice. In order for the Steelers to win the division, they would have to finish with a better (not the same) record as Baltimore.
So at 8-3, Pittsburgh is in fairly solid shape to at least secure either the #5 or the #6 seed if Baltimore should win the division. A tough way to go as most likely you have to play 3 road games just to reach the Super Bowl, so that is why winning your division is such a premium. But as the 2005 Steelers and 2007 Giants proved, winning 3 road playoff games and then the Super Bowl can be done!

There are some interesting, complicated Division winners and wild card possibilities developing. There are every year I think, and this year looks like another good one.
The Jets look like they may not make the playoffs. Now, you would probably say it's a little early to get a real feel for Divisonal winners and wildcards.
