Cemter Enes Kanter was ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA. Kanter, they said, received benefits above his necessary and actual expenses while playing for a club team in Turkey. The NCAA ruled that kanter received over $33,000 above his actual expenses during the 2008-09 season.
Take the four freshmen from Kentucky who turned pro last year. They basically had a semester and a half and then were gone.
Once the NCAA tournment ended, they reportedly stopped going to class and began attending pre-draft camps and workouts to raise their draft stock. I suspect that most of them never completed the second semester or, if so, flunked most of their classes.
This years team and next years team are being built the same way.
Hard to believe that the Kentucky fans are so hard up they would cheer for a team built from guys just biding time.
I certainly don't blame the players for moving on to much greener pastures, NCAA football and basketball are simply an unpaid farm system for the NFL and NBA. With the exception of the very few that go on to lucrative pro careers, the rest of the socalled "student athletes" get royally fucked.
I have been totally jaded for decades, and my only loyalty where it comes to sports is to my wallet. I will confess to having a soft spot for a few teams, even if I am not betting on them for the moment, but "loyalty?, not a chance.
I think my boys might be looking at an 8 to 10 loss season without him. Apparently he's a freakin beast around the basket. They're gonna appeal his eligibility but has anyone ever won anything like that VS the NCAA?
he even made the honor role for both semesters, as I discovered when I googled that questioned. Don;t know about the other 3 freshmen but Kentucky as a team had the lowest GPA of the major basketball colleges.
Of course it is in the players interest to bolt for the dough but I don't the colleges ahe any busienss giving scholarships to transients like that. But the point is that it is hard to see students feeling any real connection when 90% of team is just there for one year.
Well, Patrick Patterson graduated in 3 years and from what I understand John Wall believe it or not finshed both semesters with a GPA above 3.0. I think Bledsoe was a meathead from the git-go and I don't know about Cousins and Orton although I know Orton was an excellent student in high school. As far as the incoming guys, Brandon Knight is a member of the National Honor Society and has never made a B on his report card. Word has it the other guys are coming to him for tutoring. I wouldn't be so quick to cast stones as it's the nature of the game these days for top players to go one or two and out. Cal's definately getting the cream of the crop but it'd be nice to see one stay for 3 if not 4 years.
