Every team plays 6 games in their own division (3H, 3A). Then on a rotational basis, every team in the division will play one game against an entire other division in its conference (4 total games). So this year for example, the AFC North (Hardy's Steelers) played the entire AFC East, last year the AFC North played the entire AFC West, the year before that the AFC North played the entire AFC South, and so on. In addition, on a rotational basis, every team will play one game against an entire division in the other conference (4 total games). So this year, for example, the AFC North played the entire NFC South, last year, they played the entire NFC North, the year before that the entire NFC East, the year before that the entire NFC West, and so on. Home and away games are determined by where you played the opponent last (For example this year the Steelers hosted the Falcons...when they play the Falcons next in 2014, the game will be in Atlanta). THAT IS 14 OF THE 16 GAMES...ALREADY PRE-DETERMINED AND NOT BASED ON RECORD OR ANY OTHER FACTORS.
The only 2 games that are variable in an NFL season are based on performance the year before. The two divisions in your own conference you are not playing against (For Hardy's Steelers that would be the AFC West and AFC South), teams play games based on how they finished last year. So the First place team plays the two other first place team, the second place team plays the other two second place teams and so on. So basiscally every team in a division is on equal footing. They all play the same 14 games; only two games are based on your performance a year ago. It's a completey fair system.
Now can you get lucky as to when you play a team? Of course. Playing a bad team week 1 like Carolina will be tougher than playing them week 16 when they are out of the playoff mix. Or playing an entire division of mediocre teams (like your CHIEFS getting the benefit of playing 4 games against the putrid NFC West) can make a difference. Or playing a team that has a major injury at QB can make a difference...luck of the draw. But when the schedule makers decide when teams are playing, they HAVE NO IDEA who will be good and who won't be. The Steelers opponent this week is Cincinatti...they WON the division last year. How could the schedule makers know that they would limp into this game at 2-10?
If I were a Chiefs fan, I wouldn't complain at all. Your team is 8-4 and solidly in the playoff mix. If you are playoff worthy, go into San Diego and beat a .500 Charger team. The Steelers were able to go into Baltimore and beat a much tougher opponent in the Ravens. Find a way to get it done. And, even if you loose to the Chargers this week and go 8-5, you are really COMPLAINING about a 3 game finish of St. Louis, Oakland and the Titans? Are you kidding me???. All those teams are .500 or worse. Do you want the Bears finishing schedule of the Patriots, Vikings, Jets and Packers??? Yes, any team can beat any other team on any Sunday, but if the Chiefs don't get into the playoffs with that schedule, they have no one to blame but themselves.
