of Secretariat's time. Hasn't happened yet, and probably won't for a long time. Secretariat's victory in the Belmont in 1973 was the greatest horse race I ever saw, and was likely the greatest horse race ever! He just DEMOLISHED the field!
I made my first wager on a horse race in about 6 months today on the Belmont. (I am currently boycotting the sport on the basis of principle, the sport just has to improve customer service in order for me to patronize them any more.)
My picks for the race today. $1 TRI BOX 6-Charitable Man 7-Mine That Bird 9-Miner's Escape $1 Super Box Same numbers with 10- Brave Victory
There is hardly any pace in the race so the 9 might do the same thing Da Tara (the 08 winner) did last year, get an easy lead and go wire to wire. The 9 and the 10 are both trained by Zito who is very good in this race historically. Pretty weak field, the filly probably could have beat this field.
Nothing like a big winner to make you forget your principles...lol...My boycott is still on..lol
Funny thing though about that race in regard to the patron and customer service issues the sport has simply got to do something about.
The horse that finished 2nd Dunkirk slightly veered into the horse that finished 4th Charitable Man in the stretch run. There was a stewards inquiry into this incident. I don't think the horse should have been taken down, and they didn't take him down, it simply wasn't an incident that affected the outcome in the end.
But it would amaze you how many incidents like that, and even lesser 'incidents' that take place in other races, where there are disqualifications. And then you have incidents that are pretty obvious where no action is taken.
Inconsistency when it comes to Dq calls by the stewards is one of the main issues that has plagued the game. All the tracks could consider getting together and make a uniform policy on what warrants a DQ and what doesn't,at least make calls more consistent, but that is too much work for them, better to whine to state legislatures about needing slot machines to supplement their sagging bottom line that is a direct result of their inattention to the consumer.
They don't make them like Big Red anymore. The race day medications, breeding that has emphasized speed over endurance, and other factors have proven to make the modern thoroughbred a very delicate creature.
True Secretariat would have dusted them.
The last two years have been really poor as far as depth in the 3yo class, the horses that run the Triple Crown races. I thought that Street Sense, Hard Spun, and another real good one that I can't remember at present lol, in 2007, was a hell of a group. Big Brown wasn't really all that good he was just running against lesser horses.
The good thing about Mine That Bird is that he is a gelding, well its good for fans anyway lol, so he will run for a few years to come instead of being retired to stud at the end of the year. People will have a chance to follow him. He is no Secretariat, but aside from the race in California, he gives it all he's got every time.
