The Eagles were knocked out by by the Cowgirls (your term) last week. The Purple People Eaters ate Tony Romo and the Suckboys (my term) alive today, but they face a tall order against the Saints next week. As for Gang Green, no Jet fan on this planet except Rex Ryan ever expected that next Sunday was achievable, yet here we are. OH - OH, WE'RE HALF WAY THERE!
that was football. I loved that highlight reel from the past when they showed Roger Staubach throwing that Hell Mary pass to Drew Pearson. I was in grade school, my friend was a huge Viking fan and I was a Cowboy fan. Man, what memories.
I think the Vikings lost their identity when they started playing in a dome and fooling around with that sissy passing game stuff.
In all due respect there have been only one set of purple people eaters and they were Alan Page, Carl Eller, and Jim Marshall -forgot the other one. Jim Marshall, now that is another guy who should be in the hall of fame.
When Page, Eller, Marshall, Tarkenton, Foreman, Rashad, and company, led by their great coach Bud Grant, were a dominant force in the NFC back in the early and mid-70's. Back then, they played at Metropolitan Stadium, which meant playing there in January you'd better be ready to deal with the elements, which could be quite brutal at that time year. Back then, I rooted for the Rams (NY teams sucked during that era; everyone here rooted for contenders. This is why there are so many Cowboys, Vikings, Steelers, Dolphins, Raiders, and Rams fans here to this day).
I remember the Hail Mary...as I recall, Pearson should have been called for pass interference for pushing off on the play...Viking fans were so pissed that someone threw a bottle out of the stands, which drilled one the refs in the head. The week afterward, the Cowboys blasted the Rams 37-7 in the NFC Championship, en route to losing the Bowl against the Steel Curtain. This resonates to this day...I hate the Cowboys more than any other team in any other sport...
As for this year...Jets are still alive, and have gone further than anyone could have expected. Gotta love football...
a Giants fan since about 1952, and can remember going to the Polo Grounds in 1954 and watching them getting killed by the Steelers. As you know, that changed very shortly thereafter, and by 1956 they became a powerful football team. I also root for the Jets, although admittedly that's been a tough road (until right now). But I never stopped rooting for the Giants and Jets, even through all those shit years. But I'm mainly a college football fan, which helped me get by all those lean years with the NY teams. In line with what you said, I have many friends who tend to root for other teams, but nowadays with mixed emotions. But I've always been a Giants fan, and always will be.

...thus Drew Pearson never pushed anyone off that play. It was fair and square. Nonetheless, I am sure glad NFL didn't have instant replay review back then. I hate instant replay and challenge flags. I just don't understand why we can't just live mistakes and move on.

The SD receiver who caught the pass (legitimate, as replay clearly showed) kicked the challenge flag. As innocuous as it seemed, doing that showed a lack of poise and self-control, and a penalty was deserved. Whether this should be the equivalent of a personal foul is debatable, but a certain level of professionalism should be expected from all pro athletes, considering the $ they are paid.
Drew Pearson pushed off on the Hail Mary. I saw the game and the play...at the time, I didn't really care, I hated both teams. Plus that, the Steelers won the Bowl, I won a bet with one of my friends in HS, ans was able to buy that Aerosmith album I so dearly wanted. Childhood memories indeed!
