Joba Chamberlain left the hospital in a cast, 3 days after suffering an open fracture of his right ankle while playing on a trampoline with his son. The cast will be on for roughly 6 weeks. Chamberlain was originally scheduled to be out until June-July while recovering from elbow ligament surgery. Now some are wondering if he'll be out for the season. It makes one wonder if Chamberlain is ever going to live up to all the hype that's followed him throughout his short career.
The Yankees have mismanaged his development more than anyone within recent memory. When Joba first came up, he was a 1-inning setup man. Then he became a starter with a pitch limitation (the 'Joba rules'), then back to the bullpen. Like you, I hope his career isn't over.
I remember a time when Joba and Phil Hughes were going to be the next Yankee stars and were untouchable when it came to trades. Not so much anymore.
Developing players has not worked out so well with the Yankees lately. They should just go back to signing every free agent for 10 years / $ 300 million. More fun for everyone.
