When I was a little kid I met Bill Russell. Like a lot of kids, I collected autographs and in those days (showing my age) kids didn't collect them to sell. I asked politely (please, Mr. Russell, may I have your autograph), but he denied my request. His comment was that he was no better than me or anybody else and therefore didn't sign autographs. While I was old enough to understand the point he was trying to make, it disappointed me. My impression then, which holds to this day, is that he displayed an odd kind of arrogance and condescension.

The 2 Hall of Famers were among 15 receipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's award given to a civilian. Two very deserving, classy gentlemen.

Congratulations to a pair of Class gentlemen.  Sometimes real sports figures shine thru the trash of so called wannabees.

I've actually heard that from a couple of different friends who are in the sports media business over the years. Someone like Mr. Russell, who I'm sure experienced racism while growing up, may perhaps have a bit of a chip on his shoulders. It would certainly be understandable but I've never understood athletes who don't believe they have a responsibility to their fans. Somebody bought all those tickets to see him play and it wasn't other players.

I suppose it comes down to hero worship.

I always thought it reflected a distorted value system.

Thus, I applaud Bill Russell's view and his consistency over his career and life.
