While watching the game this evening, my mind began to wander. If you had the choice between one of the following careers, which would you select and explain the reason for your decision?

A. Head Coach
B. Referee
C. Player (Insert your preferred position played)

My choice: Referee

On game night, you'll find me watching the game...at times standing in front of the television, disputing the referees decision. I'm sure you can empathize that it's frustrating, when they don't take your opinion into consideration. After all, I watch every game...I know every rule, like the back of my hand, and I have a keen eye. Wouldn't it be magnificent if your skills and knowledge actually counted, in the game!

As a referee, your position's crucial. You won't receive the recognition or popularity, like a coach or player. However, you do have the final word...you make that decision.  You might be screaming through the television, from your stadium seat, be a player or coaching on the side lines, but guess what.....your opinion doesn't count.

As a Head Coach, you oversee and direct an entire athletic team. You will develop strategies and training regimens, plan practices, schedule games and matches. On the field, you're not going to have influence with the referee and the calls will not always be in your favor.

As a Player, you're living the dream and enjoying the spotlight. You have a strenuous training schedule, tiring practices and a demanding coach. Your faithful fans wear your jersey, supporting you with great expectations.

1) Player, by a landslide, no other option compares. The last day I threw  baseball in a real game was the worst day of my life, made infinitely worse by the fact that I didn't know it was my last day. Best day of my life? Every day on the diamond I ever spent since YMCA tee-ball.

2) Coach, different sport now, but I love using my knowledge and experience to guide a group of players, I secretly enjoy using my players like chess pieces to achieve an end, and I get an enormous high when I see a player visibly improve on the court, or when I see that "light bulb" go off over their heads when they suddenly understand something. This is where I am now.

3) Referee - I believe that coaching still requires some physical prowess and ability to perform the skills of the sport. I have trouble with my ankles, knees, and shoulders that will soon make it difficult for me to perform at this level. Some coaches coach well beyond their ability to play, using their knowledge, along with assistants to do the physical work. I don't think I want to do that. When all I have left is my experience and knowledge, I will referee, until my eyes go as well. The I will become a major league umpire for a few seasons. lol.
