Since Oregon won the Pac-10, the Rose Bowl loses its AQ (automatic qualifier) from the conference. They are not obligated to off it to the runner up. TCU is a HUGE draw for a bowl game, thus they were given the bid.
BCS rules state that any team ranked in the top 4 in the final BCS bowl gets a BCS bid. Thus Stanford going to the Orange Bowl. If Boise State had not lost, Stanford would probalby be playing in the Gator bowl. Both Stanford and Ohio State almost got nixed from BCS games. The BCS does not like having multiple teams from a conference getting BCS bids. But with 3 Big 10 teams and 3 SEC teams in the top 10, they had to give them all multiple bids.
I understand how the BCS works. What I don't understand is why Stanford is playing VT in the Orange Bowl. Wouldn't it make more sense to have Stanford play Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl? Having a traditional Pac-10 vs Big 10 would seem to me to be of more interest.
Move TCU to the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. Does anyone care about Oklahoma vs Connecticut? Send Connecticut to the Orange Bowl vs VT, at least you are minimizing the travel component, plus the games cater to their respective regions.

Championship and because they won the conference, the runner up in the Pac-10 cannot play in the Rose Bowl. Do I agree or does this bullshit make sense to me, hell no. I am wih you buddy, the Rose Bowl should be a pac-10 vs big 10 affair. I have absolutely no interest this year in the Rose Bowl. Jim Harbaugh is saying all the right things, but if you ask me, the Cardinal got screwed. The Cardinal played the Pac-10 fair and square with stellar QB play and deserve a road trip to Pasadena. After suffering years with losing seasons suddenly, a road trip to Miami doesn't seem as fun. In my opinion, a game of TCU vs Oklahoma diminishes the Rose Bowl.
I was happy when the Rose Bowl was strictly a Pac-10 vs Big Ten affair and not part of the BCS, BS. Both the Pac-10 and Big 10 are primarily academic and research conferences who happen to play football.
and you are right, it's a stupid rule. It would appear a Stanford vs Wisconsin match-up would generate a helluva lot more TV viewership than TCU. I've got nothing against TCU, nor their cheerleaders. Plus you would think Oklahoma would love to play TCU, and get a little payback for getting whupped by Boise State a few years ago. Connecticut, give me a frigging break. Go ahead and screw up the Orange Bowl with Connecticut and VT, but don't screw up all the bowls at once.
Like you, I prefer the Rose Bowl tradition. I guess you and I will be Duck fans for the next month.
either #3 or #4 if they weren't destined for a "home bowl", meaning ACC champ to Orange, Big 10 champ to Rose, etc. Since TCU has no "home bowl", they were an automatic pick for the Rose Bowl to face the Big 10 champ, Wisconsin, who Sparty defeated during the season.
The Sugar Bowl had no "home team" since Auburn is going to the big game so the SB choose 2 at-large teams in Arkansas and Ohio State. The Orange Bowl thought they would get a better crowd from Stanford than from a basketball school (UConn). The Fiesta picked last because Glendale has the big game and therefore got stuck with UConn. The Big East getting a bid is a joke.
This is correct. It's not that the 2n place team couldn't go, because it's been done before, it's just that the rose bowl was obligated to pick the #3 in bcs since it was picking first due to losing it's AQ to bCSNCG. If tCU had lost a game this wouldn't be an issue as Stanford and Wisconsin were next.
They need to change the AQ rule to include a BCS ranking requirement. No way anyone from Big East belonged this year.
