Yeah, that call was complete and utter bullshit. If it was a matter of Calvin having possession of the ball, he clearly had it with BOTH hands and basically was just using the ball to anchor himself to get up off the ground. Makes you wonder if the league preferred that the Bears win the game. One "possession call" that I always think about was Butch Johnson's touchdown for the Cowboys against the Broncos in the Super Bowl. No way it was a catch and I'm a Cowboys fan!
I have watched the no touchdown call in the Lions game, listened to the NFL's blurb on explaining the call and I'm calling bullshit on the Ref's, the NFL and all the TV commentators. How many touchdowns did you see where someone is reaching out with the ball in their hand in the corner across the goal line, hit the ground out of bounds the ball it there hand across the line, they loose control and it's a touchdown. Watch the NFL's SF, Seattle highlights on NFL dot com. First Seahawks touchdown, guy gets tackled short of the goal line falls, reaches out and ball hits in the end zone comes out of his hands, touchdown.

You're missing the point. In each one of your alternate examples, the player ALREADY HAD POSSESSION of the ball. If you have possession then as soon as the ball breaks the plane of the goal line, it's a touchdown. Dropping the ball afterward is immaterial - the TD has already occurred.
According the NFL rules, Johnson NEVER HAD POSSESSION. After catching the ball he fell down (which is OK) but he let the ball touch the ground. Had he fallen on his back - TD. Had he stayed on his feet and run out the back of the endzone - TD. Instead he broke his fall with the ball - NO TD!
I think it was a touchdown. He had possession, his knee had the ground. If they want to say he has to maintain the ball in his hand, return it to the 50 yard line and hand it to the line judge well ok. But it's bullshit. By the way not a big fan of either team.
