Had to be a big payoff for a bet that a safety would be the first score.

Here is an anwser to your question.

Most sports books in Vegas had it at 50-1.

That is pretty crummy in my opinion for anyone who bet that, it should have probably been higher.

This is one of the few scenarios I could think of, and as one who plays the horses I would think Gambler might agree (at least he will know what I am talking about), where the pari-mutual wagering might have actually been a better prospect and payoff for people who bet on a safety being the first points scored.

In the pari-mutual system you don't bet against the house and their odds (though the tracks take a cut from the overall pool, its called takeout and its too damn high) you are betting against the other bettors, the public.

If you ask me, out of a group of 100 people, how many would have said a safety would be the first score. Maybe 1 out of 100, that is about right when you look at all the scenarios. So if all 100 people put in $100 that's $10,000. So the single winner would win $10,000, not counting the takeout.

$100 bet at 50-1 would be $5,000.

If 2 or 3 people had it then it would be a different story and the pari mutual system sure as hell has alot of drawbacks but that is one way where it would be a better prospect.

Would be interested in what Gambler thinks about that as well as anyone else with knowledge on the two systems.
