I think it is of the player's discretion.  They have 48 hours to report to their new team.  One theory is: it was part of the deal that GP & Desmond not play because the Sonics didn't want to be embarassed by them if they lit them up.  It's too bad that it came to this.  Both players were definite assets to the team and the community.
