Anywhere around Union Square("downtown" SF) would be fantastic in my opinion.

Max is right.  Union Square.  It has a lot to do and great places to dine and is much more interesting than SFO, which is miles outside the City.  Go to the San Francisco regional board and do a search on 'Union Square' and you will find seveal recent discussions about this topic and recommendations for where to stay.
