I like that also.  But I accidently liked the post ABOVE the post I wanted to like, a couple of days ago.  No one can see that I liked it, can I?  I can't have you pervs thinking I liked that one, when I liked the other one.  Not that this feels like high school or anything :)

LOL, I thought I was the only one that used that feature.

how about when an old post gets a new reply and then it gets moved to the top?  I miss that.

IMHO that is the single most important thing they could do to help the threads from being so insipid.  A thread would die a natural death when it was no longer relevant (that is no new postings) rather than being automatically consigned to the dust bin because of 'age.'

Thread ordering is a big one ... I actually asked about it in the newbie forum, since most forums I'm on tend to have a setting that allows each user to pick whether they want their ordering to be "last topic first" or "last response first" (the latter is what we're all used to, it lets active threads float back to the top).  All of the responses I got from long-time users here was that they prefer the current ordering, under the theory that if TER went "last response first", trolls would use that to bump threads.

I think what might also be going on here is, on a very low traffic forum, last-topic-first works fine, because threads will stay on the first page near the top for months anyway.  But the SF forum in TER may become a high traffic forum, where you really want the crowd to determine which threads are interesting and should stay visible.  But I do think the current system naturally lowers traffic, since the interesting threads get quickly buried, and I can't believe that's what TER wants.

Anyway, I think it's worth mentioning this in the suggestion forum for TER to consider -- at least as a settable option so the longtime posters could keep their current ordering -- after we've given the current system a bit more of a chance.

I'm not liking having to look through each thread to see if there's new info.

The advantage of TER's system is that if posts start to get personal, they are gone from the first page pretty quickly, and the sob's who don't have a life have little incentive to post their crap because few people will see it

yeah I've been here a long time, before the shutdown of the other board. and the quick shutdown of posts and threads is quite a difference.  That's the difference between professionals and volunteers.

I don't know, the LA and NYC forums have been getting far more traffic than the SF forum.  I'm guessing that if the powers that be were interested they would have made the change by now.  Its a pretty standard function on other forums.

You can call me a long time TER user, but I can see how new arrivals would want the change to match what they are used to.  Worth a shot asking for the change.

hey at least the threads don't autolock after 25 posts.

That is True.  But it seems that almost all posts get personal at some point (at least in DC), with obvious, and not so obvious attacks (it is DC after all, where Everyone seems to think they need to prove they're just a little bit smarter than anyone else).

You will never be able to eliminate all the 'carping,' but at the end of the day you're left with the choice:  Do you want eternally insipid posts; or, lively discussion?

If you select the "Tree" view instead of the "Flat" view, it's much easier to follow the progression of posts.  The view link is on the upper right area of the thread.

...and widely unpopular throughout the country. I don't think it even lasted a month before it was returned to it's present format. Although the 'new post bumps the thread to the top' is the most commonly used form for discussion boards, I find it awkward compared to the TER format.

You'll notice that when you read a post, the color of that post changes so it's easy to notice when a new post has been made in a thread. Using the Tree format for thread display makes it quick and easy for you to notice when a new post has been made. However, when you visit the board on a different device, those color changes don't follow the user to the new device. That differs with the 'Like' feature which follows the user to any device that is used to read TER because one can only 'Like' a post if they are logged in to TER and can only 'Like' a post once.

Each page can contain no more than 25 threads. The number of posts to each thread are theoretically infinite. Sometimes TER will lock a thread if the behavior has gotten out of hand and it's just turned into a viral pissing match. On fairly active boards like Las Vegas or Minnesota, threads tend to stay on page 1 for about 5 to 8 days. Personally, I prefer to see threads die a natural death by falling off of page 1. After all, we can never tire of someone posting, "Hey, who gives the best BJ in the Bay Area?" can we?  ;)  :D   j/k    It's better than the alternative of where the topic of "Who gives the best BJ in the Bay Area?" has been off of page 1 for 3 months and a new response will bump it to the top of page 1; that ain't right!

This TER thread format is the format I cut my teeth on when starting to participate on discussion boards and I find it to be the most appealing to my sense of organization

And that is why TER has always been a civil, genteel community with a genuine focus on the hobby in a respectful way.
