I got a question for the serious hobbyists: What are you giving up

when it comes to money, to continue to hobby?

For me, when I could see the downturn wasn't small, but was going to be a disaster for my business (and it has been) I stopped going to the major NASCAR and NHRA races.  I sold my race car a couple of years ago but I decided that FOX and ESPN do a great job of "putting me there" via HDTV but nobody can give me nookie!   So I'm not giving up my hobbying.

And you?

living.  Instead of eating lunch out, I either bring it or skip it.  I'm kind of a gadget guy and used to get the latest stuff, but have stopped doing that.  I buy cheaper cigars and Scotch, and am slowly giving up at least the cigars. There are other things too, but it all adds up to a more frugal existence.

One major change this year was taking the kids (I have 4) skiing on day trips instead of overnights, and the Summer vacation just became a driving trip rather than flights.

Unfortunately, I've also cut back on the hobby by one session a month (from 4 to 3), but if things stay status quo, I should be able to maintain that pace as the impact on my business has pretty much bottomed out.

Great Question

I've actually given up hobbying, for the time being.  I haven't had a session in a while and I might consider booking an appt when extra money is available.

Peace...

Not really giving anything up, just making better decisions and more quality appointments.

Most of my hobbying is done when I'm travelling, with a few dates close to home on occasion. I've always put away a little at a time, so when I have a trip coming up, I can usually squeeze in a couple of dates. The only things that may have changed a little are the frequency of my trips, and the length of my dates. Now, I may ask for a two hour date, where before I may have asked for three.

I've been tracking the economic downturn based upon the 1 hour average off craigslist. Seems that the ladies are getting hit as hard as everyone else, prices are dropping, so the impact is reduced somewhat.  However, given the 'contraction' my spending has slowed down as well...
