Gary Danko over Fd'L in a landslide.  Michael Mina is great but I do not think it is worth the money.  GD is my favorite restaurant in SF proper.  Make sure you leave room for dessert at GD.  Gary Danko himself has returned to the kitchen and is the currently doing the desserts.  Try the Buttercake with huckleberry.  OMG!

The Brasserie is a long ways off.  Given the ecomony there is no rush to open the new place.  I believe the fall of 2010 is the earliest.

GD is the de facto top restaurant in SF. There was some grey area a few years ago with Hawthorne Lane.

I have about 50 top restaurants on my list for my visiting clients and they are the top shop in SF. To do any better you'd have to drive to Yountville in the Napa Valley.

Fleur de Lys is the top French restaurant in SF, although some of my friends would say La Foilie.

it's hard to imagine anything better than Gary Danko's. The chocolate souffle is sinfully good!

favorite (the original question was to make a choice of the two) for me it's "any In-N-Out burger."   Animal style.

When they wheel out the cheese cart, I am in heaven!

Oooohhhh the cheese cart of death.  GD's Cheese Cart is the Holy Grail o' Cheese.  I admit it, I am a GD lapdog LOL Plus,  ladies get extras at GD *grin* -- a take home cupcake-sized coffee cake or bread for breakfast!

Fd'L is super tasty and the service is lovely. It's not, IMHO, in the same league as GD.  That said, I fell in love with Hubert after seeing him on Top Chef Masters.  His McGuyver skills (using the shower in the dorm room to keep his past the right temp), silly sense of humor & calm demeanor combined with his food -- so sexy!

You can't go wrong at either one.  Sadly, it can be virtually impossible to get a reservation at a 'normal' hour at GD (ie, later than 5:30 & before 9:30) with less than a month+ notice.  Fd'L is far easier to get into -- I just checked OpenTable and there are 6:30 reservations available Tues - Fri this week (who's in!!)

Supposedly there will be a Danko Brasserie in Ghiradelli Square, but it's been "coming soon" for over a year.  The most recent info I could find was from June --  "Maybe by Christmas 2009" but that is looking unlikely.  (http://sf.eater.com/archives/2009/06/29/ghirardelli_ready_to_try_that_whole_rebirth_thing_again.php#more)
