I will be there for two days (working a trade show) the last week of this month. Where do the locals hang out?

Well, pretty much anywhere in the downtown area. Not sure what you mean hang out. But, Union Square area is pretty good. It's surrounded by the larger hotels and shopping. Around the Marina district is also pretty nice.

Personally I would stay away from these areas especially at night. 6th and Market, Civic Center unless there is a big function going on. But, that is my opinion.

I was looking for jazz clubs as well as museums. Historical place there.

Cool!  Check out Yoshi's in San Francisco or Oakland (at Jack London Square).  The top names in jazz perform there when they are in town so that's definitely a great place for you to check out.  

The California Academy of Sciences should be another stop on your list.  Steinhart Aquarium is there along with several other displays.  Wear comfortable walking shoes.  

Of course, if you haven't been to Alcatraz, that might be another place of interest for you.  If nothing else, if you go on a sunny day you can get some AWESOME photos of the Golden Gate Bridge.
