I used to live in Santa Rosa in the late 80's and really enjoyed the time I spent there.  It has more of a small town feel and there were some great people I got to know.

However, I'm not sure that I would want to live there now.  Even as I was leaving, traffic on 101 was starting to get very bad.  In the years since I have left it has only gotten worse.

If you can live near your work and not have to drive too much, it wouldn't be too bad.  It is a beautiful area but the road conditions are terrible.

The cost of living is quite high (although I don't know how it compares to your current locale).  In any case, I'd make sure that your compensation at least tracked the difference in cost of living.  Also, you will most likely need to do your hobbying down in the San Francisco / Oakland area, as there are very few professional ladies who are based in the wine country.

Traffic on 101 is in some ways worse than SD traffic, because there are no alternatives, so it is almost an absolute that you live someplace that allows you to not depend on that artery to get to and from work.  Additionally, the cost of living is high...but not that different from San Diego.  Some things may be higher, and housing is in the medium to nice range of SD areas.  Also, the summers can get pretty toasty in the days.  You will see 100 a few times.

Really, the big issue is where you are going to be working.  Santa Rosa is in Sonoma County, and has more of an infrastructure, as it is a bigger city.  If you are working in the city, then you may be able to avoid the traffic issue, depending on where you live.  If you are working an a surrounding city in Sonoma County, like Sebastapol (which is a great little town), or Rohnert Park, again, whether or not you commute will be a defining issue for you.  If you are living in Napa County, you are over the Mayacamas to the east, and you are a bit more isolated than if you are in Sonoma County, as there really isn't much in Napa County except things that revolve around the wine industry.

In any event, Stud is definitely correct in that your hobby related pursuits will be relegated to road trips to San Francisco, or possibly one or two in Sacramento.

Thanks for all the info.
I work form home so I wont be in the normal drive time traffic, but everybody tells me traffic sucks up there all the time.
I DID not know about the heat, I thought the climate would be comparable to SD.

As well as getting to the 100's a few times a year, it does rain there much more and get very cold on occasion.  The cold part is relative for California as it drops down into the twenties on occasion.  When it get's into the twenties in places like Minnesota they get their shorts out.  Also, Santa Rosa gets about 25" of rain on an average year and the rainfall totals go higher as you go up the coast.  While SD is almost a desert, Santa Rosa is the beginning of the redwood forest.

Too cold, too rainy.  I like being spoiled down here.
