We now take a break from our usual programming to offer this advertisment...

Mister A's I second.  Elegant, expensive.  Where the social set eats.  Interesting how many of us from the forum eat there. Giggle.  However they don't take reservations.  Also no traffic hassels.

The Marine Room in La Jolla, also tops.

Secret spot - the beach bar at the Misson Bay Hilton.  OK food, very discrete, on the bay.  Relaxing.

IMHO there aren't any good restrauants for dinner in Pt. Loma except the SD yacht club which is private.  I love the Bali Hai for lunch, best bay view in the city.  Try the salmon sandwich for like $8.95.

In Mission Valley, very discrete, dark, romantic booths, is Albie's Steak House at the Travel Lodge hotel on Hotel Circle.  Complete with pictures of naked women on the walls to set the mood...  They recently had a write up in CityVibe magazine.

I haven't been there but the steak place at the Town and Country hotel is supposed to be good too.

I don't like Anthonies, too touristy and loud.

The Afgan place on University in Hillcrest between 5th and 6th.  The India Place on University between 6th and 7th.

Italian, Antonuccis on 4th at University.  Not romantic, but great food, crowded and loud.  Always crowded.

Next week... Jamie picks the best places to have sex in public...

Giggle,
TS Jamie :-)

I am visiting Mission Valley next week and would like a couple restaurant recommendations for a dinner date. Somewhere upscale and discreet, probably in downtown, Point Loma or near the beach. (La Jolla may be too far north). Any suggestions?

Mr A's Restaurant (near balboa Park...awesome top-floor view of downtown):

2550 5th Ave
San Diego, CA 92103
(619) 239-4466

Anthony's Fish Grotto
(On the waterfront)
Harbor Drive at Ash
1360 North Harbor Drive
San Diego, CA 92101
(619) 232-5103

Also, for La Jolla:

The Marine Room

What about a place or two, in the 'Gas Lamp'.  Steak or Italian, please.  Thanks.

Downtown has the Palm Steakhouse, Morton's, and soon to have Donovan's as well. Down next to the Holiday Inn on the Embarcadero is Ruth's Chris.  For a little louder vibe, the Gaslamp Strip Club is fun- though you cook your own steak (I prefer that, since I am never satisfied with how someone else cooks it). There are many good Italian Places downtown too- Acqua al 2 is excellent. Avoid BucaDiBeppo and the new place next to the Gaslamp Hilton- cannot recall the name at the moment.

I agree the Strip Club....very very good, nice salad with a vegie tray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice Pictures on the walls too!

I appreciate the recommendations! Looking forward to my visit....

Are ya kidding me? Me I can name three right off the top of my head: Humphrey's (which has an amazing menu & marvelous ambiance), Thee Bungalow & Qwiggs (which has a great ocean view)  I have dined at Humphrey's numerous times in the past two years and think the food there is amongst the best available in the city.  Pricy but worth it.

For fancy, I always loved the Marine Room.  For "less fancy", my favorite was always Robertos.  OK, maybe that's a LOT less fancy.

Now that I'm in Las Vegas, I'm thankful that Robertos has expanded to here too.  I'm still waiting for the Marine Room to open here, but it would need to be on the shore of the fountains at Caesars.

The best restaurant in San Diego Cty is Market, in Del Mar. Perhaps more further north that where you are staying but definitely worth it !
