I believe most of us have experiences we'd like to share, and using aliases is a good way to do it. You made a reference to LE: Is it just me, or is there a justifiably healthy strain of paranoia running through our little community?

Thanks, everyone, your e-mails give me encouragement. It's always great to receive a reply from other “poor” spellers, and I appreciate your interest in my thoughts about the question, “ why do we use aliases…. Well, here we go….

The nature of the subject matter on the TBD and TER boards might predispose people to inadvertently liable; consequently, they (aliases) are used to keep the user's name a step further away from the public eye. It's just another layer of the administrative "onion", if you will.

Also, I agree, that the TER staff could probably find out any users true identity, as could just about any LE agency, particularly in lieu of the Patriot Act. I believe, this knowledge--along with the implications it has on the first amendment-makes the users and staff particularly susceptible to legal action, per the recent, late, great, TBD legal debacle. The next time, the investigators and attorneys just might get it right! And, who knows who will be subpoenaed to testify?

Also, in the case of “Lady Sylvia” (formerly of Tucson and southern California) her fluency in spoken and written Arabic, her ties to several particular Arabs in Tucson, southern Cal. and elsewhere, her precarious social status as an escort, the timing of her travels to the United Arab Emirates, England and Switzerland, and the fact that several Muslim extremist trained in Arizona, lends credence to the notion that these boards are monitored by those other than the staff. What a bummer! But, then again, why should any of us have anything to worry about if we’re upfront, honest and sincere? Don’t be paranoid.  Just be cautious.

As always, I enjoyed your e-mail. It made me think. Please write or post, again. Thanks. [email protected]

I use one on occasion because I may want to say something that I feel is a little out of character or that I don't particularly want associated with me.  I've been in the hobby a long time and i've done and seen things that I don't want to advertise, but maybe I can the results of my experience with the group.  An no, I'm not le!!

Very good point. We are not hiding, per say. I surely don't want to hide, and I doubt you do either. As to why others choose to use aliases, who knows? Maybe they are hiding their activities and interests from wives, co-workers, LE, the IRS, the Feds, etc. Maybe they feel that participating in a form like this reveals a "dark side" of their personality? Maybe they are blatant, despicable, shameful cowards? Maybe they had an unhappy childhood and they are compensating for a poor or abusive relationship with one or more parents? Maybe they are famous, wealthy public figures who are afraid of exposure? Maybe it's just tradition on the boards? Maybe they think it's just cool? I really don't have any answers, but I have a lot of stories. I've been around a long time too. If you'd like to e-mail me I'll be happy to answer, or just continue to post. Thanks, [email protected]

Yes, we did, and I'm sorry if you are bored or feel this post is redundant. I just had some more thoughts-based on my limited experience-that might be pertinant(?). Maybe they are, and maybe they're not. I just think it is an important issue that could help stimulate a lot of quality discussion on and off the boards. As always, I apreciate your input and replies about any subject that comes to mind. You can e-mail me at [email protected].
Hope to hear from you all.
