Computer protection folks. Please make sure you have your Anti-virus software up to date and that you have installed the security patches for your Windows computer.

I have spent the past to days working on issues with the Sasser virus and the Korgo virus. All due to lack of protection.

So before you become a victim, update your computer and save yourself the headache.

If anyone needs some help, PM me.

Actually, Sasser is a worm not a virus, and unusual in the sense that it only needs an internet connection to infect your computer. No need for you to click on on an E-mail attachment to get this baby. How's that for automation!

I was immediately infected with Sasser about a month ago, when I upgraded from a Windows 98 computer to a Windows XP. I managed to get it sorted out with just having Norton's GoBack (took me back to an earlier, uninfected state), and then immediately installing the patch from Microsoft.

The news agencies estimated that ~1,000,000 computers were infected worldwide, but everyone I know was hit. I think it must have been far worse than they were saying. Maybe Bill could use a few of those Microsoft billions sitting in the bank to give us a secure operating system.

You can get some good freeware anti-virus programs that will automatically update themselves.  I use AVG.  Set this up with your task scheduler that comes with windows and you can have it check for updates and do a virus scan every day (I have maine set for 11:30 every night).
Also get a good spyware.  I have both Spy-Bot and AdAware.  Personally I prefer AdAware but they are both very good.  If you have not check for spyware lately, I'll guarantee you have a LOT of spyware in your cookies - probably several hundred.  I run AdAware at least every other day.  I should take my own advice, though and put it on my task scheduler too.
Stay Safe!!!!

Spysweeper from webroot ( www.webroot.com ) was #1 rated by both PCMagazine and PCWorld for cleaning up spyware, and seems to be doing very well in preventing most spyware from infecting my computer. It costs ~$30. However, both PCMag and PCWorld noted that no single package is 100% effective, so you might want to include it in your suite of protection.

One thing of interest - my ISP is TimeWarner-Roadrunner, and it's homepage is one of the worst offenders in terms of downloading spyware. So these are the 'dynamic synergies' that AOL/Timewarner promised when they merged several years. Dumping spyware on my computer so that they can more effectively track me.

Very important to have everything up to date in both Windows and whatever AV software you run. Adaware and Spybot are nice to have as a spyware and malware deterrent and the combination of these should keep most users problem free. Unfortunately, nothing catches everything. I recently found a trojan and several new versions of malware on my system at work that made it nearly useless.Norton AV didn't see it and Adaware and Spybot would disable it until the next reboot when it all regenerated. A utility called Hijackthis allows me to remove these things by scanning the system quickly and showing everything that's running at any particular time. Caution! You MUST know how to read the Hijackthis log before allowing the software to fix your problems. "Fixing" the wrong thing is disaterous. If you're not confident in reading the log, you can save the Hijackthis log and post it to "computercops.biz" and request some help. Supplemental AV scans can also help. Check the link.
