It appears that Calista Rae has passed away.. I have no idea what it was or how it happened.

In any case, a fund will be set up for her pair of children.

As soon as someone find out more pertinent info, please post it.

This is very sad she was so young and a good friend.

Let’s keep her and her family in our prayers and help them in any way we can.

I will miss her.

I can't believe this news would be passed on without certainty, but here it is.  I would encourage everyone to hold their comments until we know for sure what is going on.

I was very upset all day thinking such a young lady with little children had pasted away.
I will get to the bottom of this scam and post the names of all involved.

I feel like a fool for falling for this kind of BS and should know better than to not wait and see if it was factual.

I am not DEAD!!!  Someone is playing a VERY MEAN JOKE about this.  Why
are these people picking on me and Alexia?

I am so APPALLED about this. Alexia just called me this morning and
told me everything that is going on.  I haven't been online for quite a few days...and haven't
checked my emails in almost a week.  As you know, I am not seeing very
many people these days....BECAUSE of BS like this.

I just heard about all of this.  I am APPALLED that soneone would do this to me.  I am not dead.  AND I DID NOT do this.  I have not had access to internet.  WHY would anyone be this mean....THIS IS JUST NOT RIGHT!!!!  Alexia and I have been getting alot of hate emails these past few months.  I don't know why?

Anyhow...I am okay.  Sorry that you were lied to....and that someone was this mean to do this to those who care about me.

There are some REAL mean people out there.  The PERSON that did this is well....you already know what I am thinking!!!!!

OMG!!!  I am completely appalled....

Turns out this was a sick joke pulled off by someone who has been harassing Cilista and another Tucson provider for several months. I’m going to have someone check the IP address so I can find out who send it or can anyone here tell me how to check it.

But I wonder how did they get our email address. I wasn’t the only one that received this email.

I’m sorry if I upset anyone with my post and will make sure I do my homework before I post anything like this again.

I’m sure if some one is computer savvy they get any info they want off your computer.

Can anyone answer her question?

Actually, I happen to work in information security in my day job and hold a CISSP certification. :-)

Most web based email providers (gmail, yahoo) do a lot of malware (malicious software) scanning before you'll get something bad, but it's not 100% guaranteed they'll get everything.

Reading a text only email online in and of itself will not infect your computer... however, you can get spyware through many other routes along the way of normal daily Internet activity... e.g. running an infected attachment (including those funny animations or games your friends might send you in email), running ActiveX content, visiting a problem website, opening a PDF if your version of Adobe Reader is not current, etc.

Or if you skipped the last 2 years of Windows XP patches on your PC, you can just connect it directly to your cable modem without using a firewall for a few minutes, and they'll find you.

If you don't know what PDFs or ActiveX is, and you like to play a lot on the Internet, and especially if you're running something like Windows XP Home, you're at risk.

Keep your computer up to date with patches regardless of what OS (Windows, Mac OS X, etc) and browser you use.

Removing spyware can be tricky- I recommend something quality like McAfee, Trend Micro, Symantec.

Just in case, change your passwords and make them strong (it's matter of debate, but I emphasize length over complexity- use passphrases to help you remember).  Use different passwords for different sites, especially if using the same login IDs.  If you are infected, the new passwords may not hold up long but there's no reason not to try it.  Also, I use a password protected Excel spreadsheet on my desktop to remember all my online passwords & phrases because I'm just too old now (40!) to remember them all.

All that said, some of the most effective attacks today are "social engineering" based - i.e. impersonations that trick others.  That could be the bulk of what has happened here...

glory hallalujah, you have risen from the dead!

I've never seen you, don't know too much about you, but yeah - this is just wrong.  I have no idea what the emails sent out looked like either, maybe they were generic and sent out from a website you are a member of, or perhaps they are addresses from your own email application.  That is scary and I know I'd be paranoid for a while, but the good news is that you are alive, and if you look at the silver lining..., well, lots of people now know you are definitely alive!  There is no such thing as bad advertising, depending on how you handle it.
