The Grand Del Mar is overblown, stiff and stuffy.  And on a mediocre golf course away from the coast.

Hardly San Diego.  

Don't really know what you are looking for or what part of town.

For example, in Pacific Beach Tower23 is quintessential San Diego. Right on the beach board walk.  

For dinner (or lunch), do C-Level on Harbor Island.  Good food, no better view.  

There are all sorts of other good suggestions.

I love the huge, colorful portraits.

They are at 1 market place downtown.  Right next door is Seaport Village and it's easy walking distance to 4th and 5th Avenues were everyone seems to go for food, music, and entertainment.  Or you can get a ride on a bicycle cart (what are those things called)?
