I'm hardly an expert at going down but do go down about 3 or 4 times a year.  I usually go down with a buddy and we combine watching/betting on Monday Night football with a trip to Adelitas.  

We usually park in one of the lots on this side of the border and walk over.  These lots vary in price depending on how long you stay and when you go some times.  We have found a bargain place to park at a small hotel right next to the Burger King near the Trolley stop.  This place has been going for $6 for 8 hours.  We have never had our cars bothered here yet.

Others may have their thoughts on this but I really don't like hitting a place like Adelitas on a busy weekend night.  Sure the selection is better but there are also a lot more guys competing with you for any of the nicer ladies.  A place like the Chicago Club is very dead until late at night or the weekend.  However, it seems that there is always something going on at Adelitas with a sufficient amount of ladies to make you happy.  

As far as border waits, I have not really experienced any.  We don't hit the clubs until after the game is over around 9 PM.  We usually come back some time around Midnight and have no more than one or two others in front of us at the border.  The only ID we take is our Drivers License.

Take a nuclear bomb and you may be able to hold off the police who will certainly rob you otherwise. Stay the hell out of there.
