I would say a Ripoff happens any time you walk away with far less value for money.
If you tip more than you should, that is not a ripoff - you made that decision.
If someone doesn't show, you have lost nothing but time, so I wouldn't say that was a ripoff.
If a provider negotiates at all or beyond what you consider appropriate, that might be a ripoff.
If a provider refuses to provide a service that you had reasonably counted on, that's a ripoff.
(BTW, that is true irrespective of the nature of the service - plumbers and electricians come to mind.)
My thoughts..

First let me start by saying I have no pre-concieved notions of the answer to this post.  I am curious to know from Hobbyist and Providers alike what makes a provider a ripoff.  Obviously Bait and Switch and Cash and Dash are EASY.  Then there's some shades of grey.  Let me give you a few of my personal experiences.  I have had girls whom I have seen a couple time who are always late - Like REAL LATE - LIKE OVER AN HOUR - which totally wastes my time since I am self employed therefore hourly employee.  Are these RIPOFFS?  What about the group of ladies who never answer emails or phone calls.  I go out of my way to get references, make calls and emails and then the provider doesnt have the decency to respond back to an inquiry.  Hmmmmm??   Look, I know we are all busy and sometimes forget but these are not isolated instances that I am talking about.  So my question is - If they arent RIPOFFS then what are they?  Just disrespectful?

...but they are disrespectful.  And in the case of someone who is habitually late by "over an hour", then they are beyond disrespectful, more like downright rude.

None of what you described rises to the level of "RIPOFF" behavior.

Matt

Agree with Arden - rude yes, rip offs no.  Upselling, cash and dash, bait and switch, that's a rip off.  The habitual late issue I've dealt with, ALOT, and from my line of business its definitely a demographic issue - GenX and Millenium folks are habitual at being late, not returning calls, etc.  Plus, and I am trying hard here not to speak for the ladies, but, many are in this line of work becuase they don't want to be hampered by the 9 to 5 gig - and that free spirit attitude has its downside.  The good news, as many of you fellow hobbyists have reminded me, this is capitalism and free trade at its best.  Don't reward behavior you feel is inappropriate with repeat business.  The market will sort the rest out for itself.

Sorry, but I keep hearing all this bs & we have reputable providers here in SD, so wtf is going on...

Get it together people provide a quality servive & show some respect please you make it hard for guys to continue.

Stealing from your wallet sometime during the session makes a girl a rip off.....lol as per my earlier post.  I must say, from a dear friend of mine who is providing now I must say some of the things you mentioned go both ways. I've seen with my own eyes, 5-10 emails back and forth only for the gent to say, ok well I'll let you know when i can see you. This after she took the time to answer questions that are clearly on her ad, check out references, say what day and times she will be free only to be told that they will get back to her. Just saying it goes both ways.

either extremely unreliable or just have a lot going on...If their not responding to emails and phones calls as prompt as you would like I certainly would not proceed in booking a one on one.

Thank you all for the input.  It is now clear to me that although they are NOT Ripoffs they are not great business people.  I couldnt imagine running a business where I am always an hour late for a business meeting or I don't return an email or phone call or a potential business prospect.  I am concluding this group of providers are just the ones to avoid.  I don't accept what others said about them being too busy - to that I say whats the sense in advertising if you arent going to respond.  The nice thing about this and other communities is that we as hobbyists share information.  I hope that the more information that is shared, the more it forces the sub-par providers into another line of work.  Thanks again! OS

interestingly, I reached out to a provider over two days, had email conversations each morning, she said she'd get back to me both days after "a redbull and a shower" and both mornings nada - so once again, the free market economy reins, or I need to take a cold shower - one or the other

Not in order, just thoughts while typing

1.  Fake pictures using someone else's body without a disclaimer ( I have a J-Lo Body type )
2.  If they show up ( outcall ) , take your $, have to suddenly leave to go to the car for something...watch     out
3.  Very poor service / experience that makes you feel worse off than before you went in and you end up mad at yourself
4.  She increases her pricing ( a la carte ) after arrival

Hugs to the ladies with good reputations

if she is late: pass.
no reply to email: re-mail her (messages can be bumped accidentally).

ur examples are NOT ripoffs, just poorly organized ladies.
