Heard it on the news, forget what channel, so confirm it somewhere!  Military starts at 11:00am.

Now, If we only had A Goose Gossage once again!

I'm SO tired of fishing and sailing and water.  Sounds like a nice reprieve.

If you were a baseball player, you would be what is referred to as a "spray" hitter...your ideas go all over the place! :)  As always though, it is good to see you here.  Don't be a stranger!

So what are the canned goods for?

I'm not sure what the canned goods are for, I guess the open house at Petco Park is a chance for some charity to get stocked up??

I actually do have the ability to hit a ball pretty much where I want to.  Never heard that term "spray" hitter, though.  Thanks!

LOL~~although, I came up in the day when girls were only allowed to hit the big balls *grin*.  One time I was in a co-ed adult league and another team recruited me after I knocked one over their center fielder's head. :)

Thanks for the compliment.  I enjoy being multifaceted.  That's also one of the nice things about TER discussion boards especially the San Diego local and the nationals.

Back to baseball.. I think my favorite baseball game was the one that I saw Eric Davis steal TWO bases on one pitch. You'll only see that kind of stuff happen against the Pads.  I was fortunate enough to have an acquaintance that attended Crenshaw High with Chris Brown, Eric Davis and Darryl Strawberry.  (Back before Straw was completely consumed by cocaine.)  We had great seats for all of the games for SF, Cincinnati and New York, nevermind I met so many players in person back at a time when I was an athlete myself.  Enjoyable reminisce!

This event is essentially a self guided tour of the new ballpark.
The canned goods go to the San Diego food bank a charitable organization.

I went yesterday and I must say I was quite impressed. There is nothing quite like the ambience of a ballpark on a warm sunny spring afternoon. I checked out the vantage point from several different locations and there really isn't a bad seat in the house.

I only wish they didn't have to bow to corporate support for naming rights.

Now if I only had the means to afford season tickets and the time available to attend all those games.

If the playoffs played at Petco Park in prime time and the Padres played the Pirates, who would you pick for the pennant?
I'd plainly pick Pittsburgh for the pennant, since previous to playing in Petco Park the Padres always pulled their playoff punches.

Sorry if this appears like pissing on Padres people's parade.

"You only see that type of stuff happen against the Pads".

Truer words were never spoken.  I happened to be at the game where Orel Hershiser set the major league record for most consecutive scoreless innings pitched back in the late 80's.  I am sure every Pads fan has a memory like that one. :(

However, I will be roting for them again this year!  Go Pads!

I was there Saturday. Petco is just awesome.

We may not have the Goose, but we have Hoffman, Shooter and maybe an Akinori Otsuka. I like the Padres chances to win the Division.

The name is all about revenues. Petco was apparently the highest bidder. petco is also a San Diego based corporation.

If Petco gives me millions of dollars I'll change my name to Petco Park.

I just can't understand why they built the park in a place with such limited parking. From what I have seen on the news, many people will be gouged for parking in the pay lots. I, for one, will be staying away.

Oh no Brother Bluto, we might get in touble.  You guys are pathetic.  Anywhere from $3 - $17 for parking..so what!  Would you have been happier if the Padres left San Diego and the entire East village would look like the shi*hole that it once was.  Get over yourself with you...I'm gonna stay away...well, I am sure that John Moore's is crying in his pillow because you are not going downtown.  This guy puts up $125 million of his own money for this project, gives over $30 million to local Boys and Girls clubs, and continues to dump money into the San Diego community and all you can do is bitch about it parking costs too much?  Take the trolley for $3 and park for free you cheap ass! (oooo, that felt good) :)

Looking forward to driving down when the Cubs are in town.  Being a native of Chicago, I can't wait to see my beloved Cubbies beat up on the Padres.  No offense everyone.

You mean like they beat up on us in '84? Hope they bring Leon Durham again. Are the Cubs ever going to the world Series?.....and uh, no offense.

The False Hope of 1984

After nearly 40 long years, the Chicago Cubs finally broke through in 1984. Led by National League Most Valuable Player, Ryne Sandberg, the Cubs advanced to the playoffs against the San Diego Padres. For long-suffering fans, this was the season they had been waiting for. Even at the age of ten, fans clearly remember what an exciting time this was. But the excitement didn't last long.

The Cubs and Padres played a 'best of five' series to determine who would advance to the World Series. The Cubs won the first two games in Chicago, and needed just one win out of three games in San Diego to make it to the championship round. This was finally going to be the year. The Cubs were just too good to lose three straight games. But that's exactly what happened. Three heartbreaking games later, the Padres were headed for the World Series, and the Cubs were once again headed nowhere.

OOOOOPS I'm dating myself SEVERELY!!!

I hate that we won't be able to tailgate, NOR will we be able to hang out in the bay waiting for a catch.

I LOVE that there is a way to watch the game from luxury condominiums, should we happen to actually know someone that bought one!!

I happen to have really good parking karma and I don't mind walking a block or two.  On Sunday, meters are free, and loading zones (yellow) don't get enforced.  It's not like they'll allow us to take anything into the park in any case, so no one will be carrying anything heavy.

As far as the name.  When they renamed the Murph, well... Hell, they're practically naming the fire engines that go out to rescue people now.  Speaks volumes about what direction this city had been heading for MANY MANY years.  This didn't happen overnight.

I don't watch sports on TV until the playoffs, otherwise I'd be addicted.  March Madness would have me glued to the chair.  I have to wait until Sweet Sixteen!  So for me it's about getting close enough to smell the sweat.  MMMM  athletes.  They make me  week in the knees.

Next big downtown city building is supposed to be a library with a view of the bay.  I'm crossing my fingers we actually go through with that.  The design I saw was spectacular.

There's only two on the schedule, from what I hear.. due to the parking concerns.

All of the County and City employees that enjoyed time off to go to the afternoon games (while getting paid, since, you know, it's really a job related affair~~ they must be DYING!!!)

I suppose I'll be saving on sunscreen.

I agree. The team sucks, the park is located in a bad area and unless he is giving it to me, I could care less how much some dick donates. Yes, I would have preferred to see the Padres go. Can someone please explain why they had to have a new park in the first place? What was wrong with the "Q"? It had a better location and great parking.

Not only does the parking suck, but the streets are going to be a bunch of one-way clusterfu**s before and after a game. Has anyone ever heard of a tailgate party? Yep, I remember those good old days. I guess those will be reserved for football, at least for now. If that nimrod wants to throw his money away, that's his problem. FYI, no trolley where I live. The fact remains that it took less time, money and energy to go to the "Q".  Damn, you are stupid. ( You are right. That does feel good)

Stupid?  I never said you were stupid...just a cry baby.  Who lives by the trolley?  You can drive to it and take one from The Q and not have to deal with one way street cluster f's.  It will be a bitch, but I must tell you that the ballpark is SWEET!  Dodger stadium has never allowed tailgate parties.  It is illegal.  There is a tailgate parking lot but you are right...fork out the bucks.  Get downtown early, head over the someplace for happy hour and have a few beer, walk to the game, enjoy the view.  Petco is like Rancho Santa Fe and The Q is like a Lakeside trailer park (sorry to those of you out in Lakeside)

:)  GO PADRES!!!
