Any suggestions on where to take my gfe's for a drink beforehand downtown or anywhere else?

But since you've left it as sort of an open question , I'll bite. Downtown, the Gaslamp District is several city blocks of bars and restaraunts, really fun, some intimate romantic places, but more of a party atmosphere. Kind of a parking nightmare though if you are not staying right there.

In North County, Del Mar and Solana Beach have some good romantic places, some of which are on the beach. Lots of good seafood and bars by the track.

The best spot though, in my opinion, would be La Jolla. I'm sure it has some official name, but , we just call it the cove. Lot's of classy joints along the rocks where the waves break. Gets cool at night, great place for a stroll and a cocktail or two.
