Hotel Circle is central, but can be a bit sketchy. I'd suggest the UTC area or downtown SD. Plenty of nice hotels and a better vibe in the area.

might be too late to comment.  downtown is nice but can be a pia to park.  .  
     
Mission valley at a better hotel is ok and most of the bayfront hotels are convenient
