Sure you can. We have been able to PM to and from aliases for about 2 years now!

Whether you want to or not is a different story, but it's not true that you "can't."

It's actually quite simple: to the left of the actual text of the post is the name of the poster.  If you click on the name, it opens up a window for you to send mail to the person.  I'm not sure what happens if the person doesn't have VIP access, and if you don't have VIP access you can't send mail anyway.  But, the idea is that all you have to do is click on the name of the poster...

This is not the case for all "envelopes" as basic members and VIPs will both have an envelope by their username, but basic members can not send or open PMs.
