You don't mention the agencies, or any other information so it's a tad hard to tell you what might be going on. There are all sorts of things that can come up. You yourself pointed out that the request was made around the time of AVN when everyone is busy, and you also pointed out that they may be having problems getting in touch with your first choice. It happens. I've had, on occasion, had to wait a month to set something up when a lady couldn't ben reached right away - they have busy schedules.
As for what to do next - my best advice is, if the agency posts a phone number on their web site, call them. Be polite. And ask them.
I realize I'm not very active here, and I only have one review. I am willing to go through any verification procedure to validate myself to an agency for booking (since the events below, I've gone through P411 verification and a private verification procedure noted below).
A little over a week ago, I contacted one of the popular agencies, and received a brief reply. I responded with my first choice of who to see, along with a few alternates. To date, I've not heard back from this agency. I realize the past week was AVN, but it seems a bit odd to hear nothing.
Late last week, I reached out to a second person, and very quickly got verified - all went very well, the email exchanges were upbeat and positive, and the last email exchanged was to "see about scheduling my first choice". At that point, I got pretty excited, but now, I have received no response in 5 days; 2 days ago I sent a brief email confirming my trip timing and politely asking for a status update, hoping to hear something in return, even if it's "working on it". Perhaps the difficulty lies in contacting my first choice to verify scheduling?
Having dealt with an agency only once in the past, I'm just confused - is this normal? How long do I wait to find out if I'm extending a trip for nothing? I'm used to very open communication from my staff as to our work status, so I'm not used to being left in the dark wondering what is going on.
Hopefully this is an innocent misunderstanding arising from the timing of my requests, AVN, and the start of the new year. However, my trip is less than 2 weeks away and I'm simply looking for some advice from you guys on what to do next with respect to follow-up with these agencies. The last thing I want to do is seem a pest to them, I don't want to tick them off, but I also need to nail down my travel plans ASAP.

Having had these exact sort of problems in the past as a client is exactly why I started this doing what I do. Not getting responces from people even if it is a small return email saying.."we are working on it and will contact you as soon as we can." Is a paramont thing. We as clients...(Yes I am still a client) plan trips and meetings and sometimes complete schedules around a chosen provider. Customer service starts as soon as an email of phone call is answered. Not with just the performence of the provider. I always do my very best to make sure that I return emails or phone calls. Nobody likes to sit and wait and wonder. I would agree with Mrfrench...contact them and ask..Dont sit around and wait for them to contact you..they have obviously proven thats not gonna happen
Thanks for the advice from both of you. That was my initial thought (to contact via phone/txt message), but I also didn't want to seem "pushy" or tick someone off, since I'm not familiar with the average turnaround time. And Mr. French, your response was exactly what I needed to hear - that you've experienced a month turnaround time on occasion. With my first choice, I suspect that is the issue - timing, pure and simple. But it's the lack of communication that Pornstarprovider calls out above that is my biggest gripe.
And I purposely did not name the agencies in question to avoid inciting a flame war over something that may be nothing!
Wish me luck, my trip is next weekend, so I hope I have plans for the 22nd or that's a wasted day/night/hotel charge. Already setup to see Sativa Rose for a 5th time on the 21st.
