Waxing Polemic.

On the Brazilianization of American's nether regions...

Summer comes and goes but it looks like Brazilian waxing is here to stay.

This begs the question: Is pubic hair the new garter belt?

My friend, Sally, had a romantic run-in with one such man after their second bedroom encounter. "Tim is hinting that I should grow it back!" she told me. Men like Tim think there is something inherently noble and glorious about pubic hair growing wild on a woman's body. They see themselves as part of a wilderness preservation movement and they don't see why this natural resource needs to be tampered with by profiteering beauticians. If you buy into their Rousseauist assumptions, it's easy to think of them as valiant eco-defenders, protesting the defoliation of the female rain forest. But maybe they're trying to impose old-fashioned ideas about womanhood on a culture that is outgrowing its Northern chauvinism, embracing the styles and sounds and sexual attitudes of the Southern Hemisphere.

Globalization is not always about U.S. values imposed on other cultures. Is it madness to suggest that American's most personal body parts have been "colonized" by beauticians from below the equator? As one who feels a bit of loyalty to both Americas -- the uptight North and the spicier South -- I find this new trend encouraging.

There are fashions in pubic hair -- for those who doubt me, a quick perusal of porn through the decades will confirm this. But you don't have to be a porn consumer to know what's up down there. At one time, waxing was ladylike. Adventurous women kept their nether locks untrimmed as a gesture of womanly defiance against all that was prim and proper. But in those days, emphasis was placed on how the waxee would look in her bathing suit, and many salons would provide a proxy bikini (made of paper) to wear during the session.

If body-waxing is about the normalization of the exotic, surely it is just a matter of time before pubic hair -- once taken for granted -- becomes a hot new fashion statement.

Hi Paola,

I truly think I'm in love with you :-) One of these days, I hope we can get it together!

What an interesting post.

We just moved from the south to the north.  Everyone in the south was waxed or closely trimmed.  Everyone in the north seems to be sporting full bush.  What a dichotomy.  The south is politically conservative, but sexually more liberal (heterosexually, anyway).  The north is socially more liberal, but sexually still very repressed.

Variety is the spice of life.  When its short, I want it longer.  When its long, I want it trimmed.  More than that, I want it waxed, cool, and accessible in the summer, but fury and warm in the winter -- how caveman of me.  :-)

I don't really care for shaved or landing strips. I also don't like the cavewoman..hair everywhere. What ever happened to the nice triangle? Trimmed yet natural. I loved Playboy mag of the '80s ... Most of the girls then were full breasted with nice, not sloppy, bushes.

Um. I for one vote for the clean shave!

As an aside tho, I can't see how pubic hair could be a new garter belt. A garter belt is an accessory, pubic hair just happens, like it or not. If anything, shaving would have to be the garter belt, just because, it's something a woman has to _do_. I also think that while a fair number of women might find _stubble_ on a man attractive, it's hard to believe any significant number of them would find the Saddam Hussein retrieved from the spider hole look attractive. No, I'm not saying _no_ women, just not a large percentage.

(And, just to recap statistics, if I say 99.7% of women are X, and we have a population of 3.2 billion women, the 0.3 percent left over would comprise 96 million women. (Just to forestall any "But, I know lots of women who like the untrimmed caveman look!" responses. Yes. I imagine there are about 96 million of them.)

Sally, who is still sparring with Tim over the length of her pubic hair, didn't start waxing until she was 24. Now in her 30s, she says, "It bothers me when I hear about 15-year-old girls removing all their pubic hair."

To be completely natural below the waist -- unwaxed -- "is a sure sign that you're monogamous or celibate," says another friend of mine. From her point of view, there isn't much difference.

All this has changed. Waxing is no longer for prudes and the paper panties are pointless if you want the full treatment. Extreme pubic waxing is now associated with exotic dancers, porn stars and provides. It has little to do with swimwear and more to do with how you look in the buff, perhaps during certain sex acts. In my culture, my Brazilian friends are all self-appointed experts on the layout and design of the female pubic region. To opt for a Brazilian job (removing all but a few stray hairs)in lieu of a light bikini waxing (removal of a few stray hairs) is to be "natural" and therefore conservative.

Interesting topic.  Pubic hair fashion has always been the venue of the sexually adventurous, with the waxing and waning of fashion unique to this arena (pun intended).  How recent has the it been that porn films have portrayed men with shaved pubic hair?  What prompted it?  Women tired of the dual tasking with blow jobs and flossing?  I appreciate a little hair but not so much that I'm hampered by it from the access I want and the ladies seem to appreciate.  So, Paola does the amunt of hair you have affect your sensitivity?  Does the man's hair make a difference to you?  Sometimes function and desire should outweigh form.

So, what happened to your trip to Atlanta? Since I'm seduced from the upper head to smaller and after this wonderfully articulate post, I would greatly enjoy some time with you.  Set dates yet?

If I had the money, I'd love to have you wax my pole.

(sorry, couldn't resist)

There are always trends, and in some cases, shaved doesn't look good. But I really don't want to go back to the 70s thatch look. At the very least I like it trimmed. Grow something if you wish,  just don't let it grow wild.

I actually prefer it shaved with the Asian babes. Asian pubic hair is straight, unless the rest of us. Ever seen a bush you could cornrow? I have. Just check out the Japanese porn chicks like Mihiro Taneguchi (who is adorable). I've been to a few Asian girls and the ones who had some hair kinda spooked me because I wasn't used to a bush that extended like that.

As for myself, I shave because a) I have a lot of hair and don't like it, b) ever have a bunch of pubes ripped out when you remove a condom? It doesn't tickle, and c) it makes me look bigger. ;)

Started the waxing trend and now have more hair than the average SP. I am in favor of women keep ing some hair. To be completely shaved flies in the face of centuries of human anthroplogy. Female pubic hair meant that the woman was old enough to have sex with. No pubic hair meant stay away. I continue this tradition by trying to get all women to at least grow something. Come on ladies, even most porn stars have hair now!
