A tribute to the legend that was Mike Tyson

After today's defeat it looks like it's all over for him. I'd like to remember the dominant fighter of the 80's that crushed and destroyed everything in front of him, seeming invincible. It's too bad his demise had to be so bad. All hail the legend that at one point truly was one of the most dominant heavyweights in history.

Mike Tyson got his start as a teenager beating up welfare mothers in the tenaments for their meager welfare money and it seemed to set a pattern for his adult life, he loved to beat women, he is a truly despicable person and won't be missed by me.

as always

HAPPY HUNTING

It never seems to get mentioned, but he's never been the same fighter since he got rid of Kevin Rooney as his trainer. He was indestructable and unbeatable prior to that time.

I was never fond of him as a fighter, but I thought he was basically a good man in over his head. And while I never agreed with his choice of opponents, he was loved by most Americans and served his country well.

I'm the primary caregiver for my uncle, an ex-palooka who suffers from the ravages of Parkinson's. It's a shame to see someone turn into a shell of what they once were, so it's probably for the best for Tyson and his family that he retires.

May he rest in peace.

Do you have Tyson confused with someone else? "Loved by most Americans and served his country well?" The only thing he ever served was time in the Indiana State Pen system and I'd hardly say that Iron Mike was loved by most Americans.

I don't think he has Tyson confused with someone else. Tyson was in fact loved by most Americans and was seen as a true patriot. Even last night he got loud cheers and the crowd was 90% pro-Tyson at the event. He served his country well as a heavyweight champion and indestructable force in the 80's. I remember the excitement and commotion associated with a Tyson fight before the Buster Douglas debacle in 1990. He was the primary source of entertainment for a whole sport for a good portion of the 80's. Of course later on he went on to do some dispicable things and became a highly cantankerous individual. I wasn't found of that Mike.

Good man ? what ? loved by americans ? he was a thug who made a whole lot of money and blew it. Kevin Rooney was a big part of his success and father time caught him as well.

Once the devil (aka Don King) got a hold of Mike Tyson it was all down hill from there. Took all his money, set him up with two pimp like style managers and worthless trainers.

The funny thing is I remember Don King saying that Mike belonged with him instead of his Jewish promoter, manager and trainer because they were just using a black man for his money.

You seemed to have missed the fact that this post is suppose to be satire... If you go back to the post regarding Regean's passing, then to the one about Ray Charles death, you'll see that they're all the same post with slight changes in the references...

Tyson was never a good boxer... he was a street fighter who battled his personal demons by beating the shit out of other fighters.  He was extremely good at it, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch, but it was inevitable that it couldn't last.  Remember, the last time Tyson was World Champion was 14 years ago when he was 24, the age where most atheletes reach their peak. Without intelligence and skill, he had nowhere to go but down.

And wife beater.  He's a sad excuse for a man.

He probably was not the best of a man, but he was, and is top entertainment.  I love to hear him promote a fight, you never know what he may say.  I for one will miss iron mike.  In my early 30's, I never got to see Ali in his prime, so to me, and many in my generation, the you iron mike is the best of all time.

Agreed, fasteddie. Tyson was never a boxer... he is a monster given license to maim and destroy inside the ropes. Inside the ropes, there have been few with the power and ferocity of Tyson. However, there's more to boxing than what you do inside the ropes.

Tyson is pitiful outside the ring.  His 'subtle as a chainsaw lacking all the social graces' approach to life is considered criminal. Indeed, he is a wife beating rapist who somehow dodged prison for biting Holyfield's ear off - b/c it happened inside the ring.

Anywhere else that's considered battery at best, cannibalism at worst. But he's Mike Tyson, the man who was so desperate that he could find no other way to hurt his opponent than to use is gold encrusted teeth.

Was Tyson the Greatest of All Time (in his prime)?  No. Not Tyson. Ali proved that age means little, Foreman even more so. A good athlete can always arise to the occasion if he has the heart.

A champion leads by example outside the ropes through the strength of his personal convictions, not his criminal ones. Ali was a coward or whatever, but he never beat his wife.  Foreman gave back to his community.

By comparison, Tyson is just another pretender to the throne.

A boxing magazine recently named the 12 greatest heavy weights of all time and Iron Mike was ranked #9, because strip away all of the bullsh@t and he was a very good boxer, allways had great footwork, hand speed and of course punching power that may only be matched by the likes of George Foreman and Tommy Morrison (yes, the white boy with the glass jaw, lol). Think about it, only Ali, Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Joe Frazier, Joe Lewis and a couple others ranked ahead of him, with Lennox Lewis and a couple other all time greats ranking behind him and I can't really argue with those rankings, cept for Lennox Lewis, the man only had a jab and ran from people the entire time, IMHO a sorry excuse for a heavy weight champion.

I can't judge anyone, that' my way,but i'm a big boxe fan and all i can say is that he really ruled the scene in the late 80's and is still the youngest heavyweight wc ever, maybe he didn't face strong opponents while he was in his prime, only we can't put the blame on him for that. His autodestructive motion started way before the rape and the imprisonment, losing to J."buster" Douglas was as bad that time as it looks now.In conclusion i still hope the man Mike Tyson a bright future, the problem is which should it be?

So i say give him a shot.  If everybody who has made mistakes is forever condemned then we are losing the just of humanity.  He himself said that he is a changed man because he has lost everything...Put too much trust in people who were not his true friends. And He takes responsibilities for that. He has done things that he is not proud off, but will he do the same in the upcoming years.  I really doubt it.  I for one will wait to see how ernest his attempts at righting himself, before i say he is the scum of the earth.

As for his fight.  There is a report that he tore his knee ligament in the first round.  Let's see if this is true before we call his career a done deal.
