In LA County - an autopsy is conducted within 72 hours and the body is released upon it conclusion. During the autopsy, specimens are collected for toxicology. Depending on their lab's case load, processing of those samples can take up to 3 months to be processed. The results are sent to the Medical Examiner who officially rules on the type of death and signs the death certificate. This whole process takes a minimum of 3 months.
