I think it would depend on the provider. I saw my first provider this year. Obviously I had no references. I emailed and asked for a same-day appointment. She promptly replied and said that she didn't have enough time to verify my info, but she suggested meeting face-to-face. We did so and we had a nice conversation in a public place. It put us both at ease (I was nervous). She said I sounded ok on the phone and she wanted to confirm her gut-feeling in person, which she apparently did. We ultimately had a great time. I did, however, have to give all my info (name, address, phone, employer, etc) to the provider, so how will you feel about that?
I am just about to start the full Hobbying and need to know other options other than going through a "screening service" to be able to make a date with a provider. I am not comfortable with giving all of my personal information to a service that if pressed by LE might have to give up my info. I realize it is for everyone's safety but I would rather not go that far. Has anyone met a provider for a quick meeting in a public place like a hotel bar to get to know each other? Just worried about keeping this private.

I'm new at this myself. I met some providers at meet and greets which solves the face to face thing, but you may not necessarily meet the one(s) you want. I also did the P411 thing without a problem.
Bottom line for me is this: someone, at least the provider, has to know who I am, unless I make up a completely fake name and ID.
I would never give personal info . The BEST way to get around it is go to Canada which doesn't require screening . Make appts. with reputable agencies , unlike U S there are many , and get agency referral.
Go see a well-reviewed lady or established agency and provide all your info. It is a one time deal once you have the first appointment under the belt you will be able to provide basic info to the next dates. I learned that seeing providers who do not screen much is useless because the more established providers do not take references from such girls. High-end girls require more screening than others but it will be worth it. I stay clear from those who do not screen.
I'll be visiting the US for the first time shortly and I gotta admit, it amazes me the screening process you guys have over there. Being in a country where prostitution is legal, there's never been a need to give a provider anything more than a mobile phone number to make a booking. Most guys use an alias name, and there's never any need to give a provider your real name or work details, etc.
If only the laws were different in the US and legal in a lot more places, perhaps this invasion of privacy wouldn't be needed.
Having said all that, I know the US is vastly different to where I live, and if I manage to see anyone there that requires screening details, then I'm happy to abide by the current ettiquette there and provide those details... As they say, When in Rome .....
