most providers ask for job information (company phone, company name, etc).  how do they use this information?  will they actually call the company i work for?

If you provide work info, assume that the provider will use it.

Typically they may call, ask for you and then hang up once they know that you really do work there.  It's not like they're going to have a conversation with the person who answers the phone... More like; "May I speak with Bill Smith"?  "Hold on please"... "click".
