Porn Stars

Is it real?

After reading several news articles and commentaries, I'm beginning to wonder how much of this is real, and how much of it is a scare attempt by the right wing to force the porn industry to use condoms.

One commentary points out that the lab called the star with the results and that labs NEVER do this.

One commentary points out that the lab only said that the sample was "contaminated".  That doesn't mean HIV positive - that means something happened to the blood that makes the tests worthless.

Another article points out that the porn industry "has considered running away from Los Angeles to shoot, considered not getting the required permits as well as brazenly continuing to break the law—they’ve considered everything except complying with the law. It is high time these laws requiring condom use by adult film performers—both Measure B and the previously existing Cal/OSHA statutes—are enforced on city, county and statewide basis." making it very clear that the position of the writer is that the porn industry should be using condoms.  In fact, the majority of the article was less about the fact that someone may have tested positive and more about the fact that the industry doesn't use condoms.  It's as if the writer has an agenda.

One of the things that bothers me about the article is the comment: "Testing is not prevention".  Um, excuse me?  The industry currently requires stars to get tested, and the production companies verify the test results before allowing anyone to perform.  So, yes, testing is prevention in the sense that someone who tests positive won't infect someone else because they won't do any scenes with anyone else.  Or at least that's the theory - I suspect that some producers completely ignore the tests.  THAT'S where the real problem is. If the industry did proper checking of the tests, and did not allow someone to perform who was infected, it WOULD prevent further transmission of the virus.

And that's where the real tragedy is - if some of the producers weren't so slipshod about the testing, and preventing a person who tests positive from performing, there wouldn't be as much of a need to enforce condoms.  Of course that won't stop the right wingers from still shouting to the hilltops that people have to use condoms - they'll simply find another excuse or reason.  But, if the industry properly followed its own rules and procedures, there would be fewer problems all around.

Another point to be made here is: assuming the woman is HIV positive.  How did she get infected?  She's being considered part of the "first generation" of infectees so people seem to be taking the attitude that she brought the virus into the industry and others who performed with her may have also been infected.  So, um, how did she get the virus in the first place?  It was, if you follow the logic, not from doing porn.  So forcing the porn industry to use condoms won't prevent performers from getting HIV - some still can/will get it from sexual activity done outside the industry.

Again, this whole thing is in the early stages and as more information develops and becomes public, we'll be in a better position to judge.  But, right now, I really wonder how much of this is paranoia, and how much of it is being exaggerated by the right wingers to force their views upon others, and how much of it indicates that a real problem exists.

Only time will tell how this plays out

CANOGA PARK, Calif – After consulting with APHSS medical professionals, the Free Speech Coalition today is calling for a moratorium on adult film production due to a performer that has tested positive for HIV.

“We are following established protocols,” said FSC CEO Diane Duke, “for the protection of performers.”

The moratorium will continue until further notice; APHSS will update industry stakeholders about the moratorium as more information becomes available.

"some still can/will get it from sexual activity done outside the industry".

What about crossover male stars (gay porn to regular porn), what about certain types of drug use (ie; sharing needles), remember the Daren James incident from 2004 - he allegedly got it from anal sex w/a transvestite...

You're quick to blame privates for all the problems without any support whatsoever..As the classic political saying goes "your entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts"...

I get it...Your against BB, fine...But please refrain from blaming privates, when many problems occur because of things mentioned in the 1st paragraph..

I actually know the performer personally. She gets tested regularly. Unforetunately she has an on again off again relationship with a male porn star that shoots gay and tranny porn. He is also an escort for gay men. To my knowledge he is the only person off set that she has unprotected vaginal AND anal sex with.

PLEASE STOP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH.

Nothing of what you accuse me of saying is actually in what I said.

Remember, the discussion is about the use of condoms for sex.  It has NOTHING to do with drugs.
It DOES cover the crossovers and the other stuff and that's included in the statements I made: either they are tested and they don't perform if positive, etc. - just like the female performers.

And I said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about private sessions specifically.  What I said was porn stars can and will continue to contract STDs from what they do outside the filming.  That includes all those porn stars who are swingers, and have multiple sex partners, boyfriends/husbands/girlfriends who contract STDs and then bring them into the relationship, and ALL OTHER FORMS of sexual activity.

PLEASE STOP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH.

I am a proud "right wing" person.  I resent that you point fingers at us.  Legislation in California is from the left wing, not the right.  We have no power out there.  Please place your blame on well intentioned left wingers who try to control people's lives, not on the well intentioned right wingers who try to control people's lives.

I know you're simply responding to a comment from mrfrench, but there is a forum for that. And by the way, isn't finger pointing what either side has ALWAYS done? You're no exception. Please take this garbage elsewhere.

I'll restate it, although I personally prefer (as I'm sure most others do) BB porn and sex, I would rather hear from performers themselves about the issue of safety and condoms.

Until we hear from them, all else is just the opinion of people, (i.e. fans, producers etc) who don't really matter.

There are varying levels of risk to personal health and safety from many jobs. It's not necessarily that porn is more risky than say construction or mining. However the latter two have organized bodies to represent their interest, negotiate terms including for example ensuring long term health care benefits in case of personal injury.

As fans and consumers of porn, we should be able to play a role in supporting and advocating for the performers well-being, health and safety even while satisfying our carnal desires. Relying on the production studios to determine and voice the interest of the "industry" without allowing a more independent voice from performers is backward.

It's a bummer we still turn a blind eye to this.

has tested positive for HIV.

The star has 34 reviews here on TER so this does affect us and our community.

But if you are not sure that this is not true or just a bunch of BS, may I suggest you go to google
type in
