Nevada, like most states, is rich in history. From a strictly tourist point of view, you should not miss it. In addition to the casino and entertainment industry in Las Vegas and Reno, you would enjoy the beauty of Lake Tahoe and the history of what is now a ghost town, Virginia City.
Regarding legal prostitution in Nevada, it is important to remember that prostitution is not legal everywhere in Nevada, and most importantly it is not legal in Las Vegas or Reno. The closest legal brothel to Las Vegas is about 90 miles, compared to about 10 miles from Reno, or about 5 miles from Carson City.
From my experience, I would not characterize the Moonlite BunnyRanch as "dirty, sleazy" but I will admit that it definitely lacks what realtors refer to as "curb appeal" when you are standing outside. The exterior is anything but palatial, and the inside is nice, but more along the lines of a nice 3 or 4 star hotel, not a 5 star luxury hotel. Same goes for the girls' rooms. Nice, but in a middle class way. For something that is more "luxury" or classy looking, you might try the Wild Horse Adult Resort & Spa or the rebuilt Mustang Ranch.
Dennis Hof is a character, a PT Barnum type promoter. Like most ambitious and flamboyant characters, the normal reaction is to either love him or hate him.
The main appeal of the Moonlite BunnyRanch is the tradition that began when, in the late 1990's, Sunset Thomas became the first porn superstar to work in a legal brothel. I saw Sunset Thomas at the BunnyRanch in 1998 and I must say that she is absolutely incredible in every way. The last time I saw Sunset, she was at Sheri's Ranch in Pahrump. Some other porn stars I have seen at the BunnyRanch include Nikki Lynn, Sunny Lane, Cindy Crawford, Teri Weigel and Rayveness. In every case, these women were more beautiful in person than in their photos and videos, and they were all friendly and eager to please.
If you have a particular porn star that you really want to see, it is best to set an appointment. Otherwise, the usual routine is to have the girls parade by you in a "lineup" format which, although some guys like it, I would not recommend. A better alternative is to go the the bar area, relax, mingle with the girls there, and watch for the girls who are returning from their previous sessions. The brothels are like the porn industry in that "the best looking girls get the most work." In general, the girls that you seen in a lineup scenario are not the best looking girls, because the best looking girls will probably be at work in one of the rooms while you are meeting the lineup girls.
All in all, it boils down to personal preference when it comes to "brothels versus independents or agency girls." The main advantage to a brothel is that it is legal, so you don't have to worry about about a law enforcement sting, or some sort of ripoff by the provider (or an impostor). Another advantage is that, if for some reason the girl you want to see is unavailable, there are dozens of other girls nearby who are ready and willing. The main disadvantage would be the number of regulations, including "absolutely no exceptions" to the condom requirement.

It is ironic that you mention the reviews of Max at the Bunnyranch. On this TER site there are 4 reviews of Max at the Bunnyranch. Three are from 2005, and one is from 2010. And they all sound like very good reviews.
And I disagree with your comments about the pics of the girls. As I mentioned above, from my experience, all of the porn stars looked better in person than in their pictures, especially Sunset Thomas. And my favorite house girl, Hello Kitty, is a complete knockout, much better looking in person than in her photos.
