AVN (Adult Video News; avn.com) has lots of industry stories that will mention the names of the major studios / production companies. And they have stories about the good and the bad, e.g., So-and-so arrested for some crime; So-and-so died from a drug overdose. Some real eye openers.
.
I remember main street media running stories about specific girls who were outed, e.g., a student at Duke (Belle Knox?) who got into porn and was outed by classmates who recognized her. She was harassed and had to take a leave of absence. I think there was also a gymnast from another east coast college who also did a few vids and got found out. Oh ... in subsequent interviews, they said they saw ads from the companies; they answered the ads and got invited to do a shoot. LEGIT COMPANIES PAY ROUND TRIP TRANSPORTATION AND LODGING. "If you fly yourself down to (LA, Florida, ...), we'll give you a tryout" is NOT that way it should work. Stay away from those cheapskates.
.
I have also read that getting a good agent is important. Some other first person interview stories from the east coast came from strippers who were approached by guys claiming to be agents and asking them if they would be interested in getting into porn. One of them was Sunset Thomas, I think. She was a stripper in the Northeast. Some club regular approached her and there was a real interview -- no hanky panky. He was a real agent. He had a questionnaire with hundreds of items of the "Which of the following do you do? Yes, no, maybe" type. Fellatio Y N M, Swallow Y N M, Interracial Gangbang Y N M ... for page after page and she had to ask what some of them were. I guess the idea is that he, as agent, can't just send a pretty face to an audition on the west coast if only then she is going to say, No No No No No ... No. (Sunset stopped doing videos and became the #1 earning cam girl according to a story in AVN.)
.
Another story: Someone did her first shoot with a Florida company and got paid. She had second thoughts and begged them not to release the video (on the internet or DVD) and said she would give them their money back. They told her to keep the money and not to worry: "We won't release the video." As you might have guessed, they released the video with a big promo. It was her first and last shoot. Make sure you are certain that you can handle the experience and the subsequent fallout. This being the internet age, people who know you will eventually find out, even if you don't make headline news.
.
There are some Providers here on TER who post to the boards (photo only, Ad boards, sometimes Discussion boards) who also have their own pornhub porn channels with a bunch of XXX videos. Those are their own productions, not the property of the big studios. Maybe some of them have advice for you? (Private production vs. working for a studio ... or do BOTH!)
.
Are you able to get to an AVN Adult Entertainment Expo or other trade show? I don't know if that's a good idea or not. While guys are trying to pressure you into getting started right away, maybe you can talk to some of the ladies and get their advice or intros to their agents.
.
Make sure you're up on your sex ed and testing for STDs.
.
Have a plan. Or plan to have a plan. Do a few shoots and use them to promote some other adult career (stripper, escort, producer - director, author)? Do as much as possible for 2 years, make as much money as possible, then get out quick? Get good financial and business advice. File your taxes. Save. Open a retirement account. ... Write a book about all the stupid advice people gave you on the internet.
.
Good luck!
