Unions: It should be about freedom of contract and association

Republicans in Wisconsin are going after the wrong target. Collective bargaining is what a union is all about, and isn't the cause of the problem. Forced union membership and hiring is the problem.

In a free society, unions should be allowed. They should be allowed to bargain collectively. But workers should not be required to join a union in order to work for an employer or in a profession. Employers should not be forced to hire only union members.

If an employer is paying too little, or mistreating workers in other ways, the workers should be allowed to unionize, present their demands, and even strike if needed.

But if a union presents unreasonable demands, an employer should be free to fire union members and hire other workers. But the employer should not be free to use force, either.

Such a free system would strike a balance between workers and employers.

Because the management side is dealing directly with the union, not the actual laborer.  What would make it balanced is if management had a union, or layer or "organized management" to deal with the organized labor.  Then neither management or labor would ever talk to each other.  That would be insane, but the only fair balance to strike, no pun intended.  Of course, in order to complete the fantasy, the money for both sides would grow on trees.  Then the money would not be coming from either side, but raining down from the heavens.

They would have weekly sock hops to socialize with each other.  There would be a prize for the person that does the Twist the best.  A separate prize, one for the best laborer and one for the best manager.

Whenever there was a dispute between management union and labor union, then they would picket each other.

And they lived happily ever after.

If I didn't hear similar gibberish as "criticism" of free market economic principles from such luminaries as Paul Krugman or Michael Moore every day, I would think you were trying to be funny.

Fair gibberish is better than unfair gibberish.

dues that are largely supporting a lavish union leadership lifestyle AND having a portion of my dues sent as political contributions to people I do not support? for these reasons, I'm not so enthused about unions.

Why? Left up to, I wouldn't pay them one red ¢ and pay for performance would the same and if they have to give back on the basis of performance the Federal budget will be already in balance.

Why are you keeping paying these unproductive under perfroming leaches?

Stop watching too much Faux News, it has taken over your brain!

I had these convictions, understood these ideas, long before there WAS a Fox News.

Anytime someone expresses an idea that is not in line with the liberal/leftist dogma, they are accused of something, including being "brainwashed" by someone.

How about actually arguing the subject? Personal attacks simply prove you've got nothing.

In American political reality any organized group is tempted to have a political affiliation. Therein lies the problem; political contributions. Cash fucks up the whole process. Every one wants to be paid and the American dream is "everybody gets a chance to get paid". America needs to wake up to the fact that in order for capitalism as we know it to exist, many people will not get paid. The question is who will make the decision about pay. Today it is a question of who will get less. Tomorrow's question is who will get nothing. Unions , in theory, allow workers to participate in the process. But unions have sold out to the democratic party and for this alone, they deserve to be crushed.

The   reason Wisconsin and many states across the country are bankrupt is due to unfunded pensions of public employees and this is  made possible by collective bargaining. The gov wants this taken away because he knows they can get those deals again with it  and undo all the gains he has made for the state.
