Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., defended his decision to make an endorsement in the race for president during an interview with Gazette editors on Monday…

Rockefeller criticized Sen. John McCain, the presumed Republican nominee for president. “Senator McCain does have a temper. But today, he speaks in a monotone on the campaign trail.”

Rockefeller believes McCain has become insensitive to many human issues. “McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit.

“What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn’t know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues.” …

The relevant question is how a straight talker could walk thru a bazaar in full body armor, with a platoon of Marines escorting him, with snipers covering and helicopters overhead, and think that it was just like a mall in Indiana.    Or how a presidential candidate could think it wouldn't matter if we were at war for 100 years - or exactly what plan he might have to accomplish what goal.   It seems that any reasonably bright fellow  should be able to see that this mess is going to be decided by economics - the Arabs won't beat us, but we're very likely to beat ourselves by exhausting our treasury with no significant impact on mid-east politics.   Any reasonably bright fellow would ask exactly what we were trying to accomplish, and how we expected to accomplish it, before he crossed the LOD.


As a matter of fact, all ground pounders in insurgencies expect close combat.  3/11 Marines was recently mounted out as a provisional MP battalion; and we know Marine artillery officers who train infantrymen, because all Marines are riflemen.

That's not so much the point as the fact that ground pounders are more frequently confronted with the question of exactly what they are trying to accomplish, and whether they are doing it in the smartest way.   Pilots have a tendency to think in terms of percentage kills, and assume that if you destroy the target, the misson will be accomplished.  They don't often see kids drop grenades at their carriers.

Republicans do tend to cater to simple-minded assholes.  Hence you have fellows like Cheney claiming that 9/11 changed the rules of economics, and brain-dead Republicans who never served thinking that warfare is just like a fuckin football game.

Iraq War
Rockefeller has been an outspoken critic of President Bush and the Iraq war in the past years, especially starting in late 2003. As chair of the Intelligence committee, he has indicted the President for his handling of intelligence and war operations. The previous year, however, Rockefeller was very much in line with Bush and those pushing for strong action — military, if necessary — against Iraq and Saddam Hussein.

On October 10, 2002, he said that "There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years... The global community -- in the form of the United Nations -- has declared repeatedly, through multiple resolutions, that the frightening prospect of a nuclear-armed Saddam cannot come to pass. But the U.N. has been unable to enforce those resolutions. We must eliminate that threat now, before it is too late... Saddam Hussein represents a grave threat to the United States, and I have concluded we must use force to deal with him if all other means fail." [9]

fire every Republican, and do a couple terms of criminal investigations to figure out which ones are the masterminds, and which ones are just dumb as rocks; then figure out where the money went, and how much can be recovered.

Hitler was dead less than 4 years after he declared war on us.  Bin Laden has been running free for over 6 years, with nothing but a bunch of ragheads protecting him, and he can do this because Bush knew that his buddies would make money in Iraq, but they'd lose out if bin Laden were actually caught.

Bush didn't fuck up.  He & the RNC did this deliberately.  He knew goddamned well what he was doing.  He's reckless with other people's lives and money as he's always been.  He set up every casualty we've had in Iraq.  I'd be happy to hand him & Cheney to a war crimes tribunal - save us the trouble.  A 2/Lt who did something like that wouldn't come back from his 2nd patrol - if he got one.
