This proposed initiative is a blatant attempt to steal the 2008 election...

If you want to reform the electoral voting process, do it in ALL 50 states, not just in big blue state CA....

A good constitutional lawyer should be able to tie up this dreadful proposal in court, as that's where it belongs....An initiative so partsian does not deserve to be on the ballot...

"Laurence Tribe, a Harvard law professor and one of the nation’s pre-eminent constitutional scholars, believes the initiative is blatantly unconstitutional. “Entirely apart from the politics,” he said, “this clearly violates Article II of the Constitution, which very explicitly requires that the electors for president be selected ‘in such manner as the Legislature’ of the state directs.”

It might have been necessary 230 years ago when it was impossible to tabulate votes in real time. With the technology available today there is no need for such an obsolete system.  California leads and the nation follows; so now is a good time to do away with the Electoral College.  One voter = one vote.

There's nothing in the Constitution that requires the state electors to vote for the candidate who won that state so there is another movement proposing that state legislatures require their electors to vote for the candidate who won the national popular vote, effectively eliminating the electoral college without having to amend the Constitution.

they are following the law.

only in the mind of leftwingers afraid of losing power does that mean "stealing"

no wonder you never think you're lying.

cuz if it was, the group proposing this would be adovacating similar measures in Ohio, Florida, Texas, Missouri....

The Republican presidential candiate hasn't won Califorina since 1988, & one doesn't need to be Tim Russert to know that the Democratic nominee will win CA. in 2008....And Republicans, fearing a close election in 2008 are devising this scam to obtain 20 or so electoral votes they don't deserve....

There has never been such a blatant attempt in American political history to rig an election as this current initiative proposal in CA.....

And even though Schwartzenegger came out against it, he didn't denounce it enough...

"Even Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, has suggested that the initiative is a form of dirty pool. While not explicitly opposing it, Mr. Schwarzenegger said it smacks of changing the rules “in the middle of the game.”

Democrats may have to spend millions, but this initiative must be defeated at all costs...

as a step toward eliminating the byzantine concept of the electoral college.

But in any single state, it's just another example of pimping the system.

when it was being done in other, smaller state.

NOW, when an election hangs in the balance, you're concerned about "gaming the system".

But besides that, I really object to your calling this "stealing". You're a smart man. Why do you speak like a demagauging bullshipper? This "stealing the election" kinnard has been thourouly debunked and yet you still chant it as if repeating it over and over again will make it true.

""""Democrats may have to spend millions, but this initiative must be defeated at all costs...""""

Maybe the DNC proxies like SmearPetreaus.Org can loan you some of your money back?

Or at least it must be, because I find myself agreeing with Jacko again.

The problem with most partisans, is that it's only cheating if the other side does it. Let's just admit it, both sides try to "pimp" the system. This time it's the right, next time, who knows?

"when it was being done in other, smaller state"..

Only Maine & Nebraska split their EV's...Furthermore, it's been done in those 2 states for quite some time, they only have 9 EV's between them, & they've never been split anyway, as one candiate has always recieved the enitre allotment....

Yes, the Democrats almost tried a similar proposal to try to split North Carolina's 15 EV's...But Howard Dean stepped in told them to do the right thing & so they backed off....Can't piecemail this , electoral reform needs to happen from Maine-Hawaii & all points in between if there's to be intergrity to the process.......

Come on Bilkile, this CA. initiative is so partsian its not even funny...The law firm behind it worked on the Davis recall & also has ties to the Swift Boaters from 2004...They want this on a special June ballot, when the primary is Feb. 2008...See, they're hoping no one shows up in June but Republicans.....Sorry BK, everything about this initiative stinks to high heaven.....

"Maybe the DNC proxies like SmearPetreaus.Org "

After what those Swift Boaters did to Kerry & what was said about Max Cleland, it's funny how people on the right get worked up about Moveon.org...

and gerrymandering wasn't against the law either.  It doesn't mean it isn't f*cked up, and it doesn't mean it isn't messing with the integrity of the system.

I'm no fan of the electoral college, but the Republicans are trying to make an end run around the process.

pARTISAN? YES. Stealing? No.

Big Difference.

SAme thing w/Petreaus.

The dude is commanding men in the field for Gods sake. Presumably he is commanding OUR soldiers. Lefty freaks are so fucked up in their thinking they lose that disticntion in calling this "Bush's war".

Kerry and Cleland were stuffed suits running for office so I don't think they get a similar pass. Especially when Kerry acts like such a chestbeater in the first place.(I don't know much about what happened to Cleland so I'll beg off ignorant but same difference...)

"pARTISAN? YES. Stealing? No. Big Difference".

If Democrats would try a similar move in Texas,(split the states 34 EV's) Republicans would say the same thing...And they'd be right....The Republican candiate will almost certainly win Texas, & to adjust the rules of ONE state for the benefit of the ONE party likely to lose that state is, well, Stealing...Many editorials (one attached) have blasted the CA. proposal using a host of negative adjectives...

As far as what happened to Cleland, this summarizes it best:

"Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) ran an extraordinarily mean-spirited campaign in 2002, accusing decorated Vietnam veteran and triple amputee Max Cleland of lacking patriotism. Chambliss also paired pictures of Cleland with Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein".
