Kerry Gets Permission to Drive 'Family' SUV

(2004-04-22) -- Just hours after telling reporters that he doesn't own an SUV but his family does, Sen. John Forbes Kerry announced today that he had gained permission from his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, to drive the family's Chevy Suburban on brief trips to the grocery store or dry cleaner.

"I didn't ask to take it on the campaign trail because it gets lousy gas mileage which is bad for the environment," said Mr. Kerry. "But I was excited when Teresa told me that I could run out to the Piggly-Wiggly in the big rig."

Mr. Kerry's spokesman later explained that, "the family calls the SUV 'the big rig', not Senator Kerry, because it's not his vehicle, so he doesn't need a nickname for it. The SUV belongs to someone else in the family--in this case, his wife, but not the Senator."

President Bush could not be reached for comment because, according to his spokesman, "he's out hauling some lumber in his Ford F-250 Super Duty, four-door pickup truck."

But seriously, how many of you really think that Kerry will make it past the Dem Convention?  Those of you who still think so, you might want to catch Kerry's interview on Good Morning America this morning... its bound to be repeated over and over again.  The GOP may even use it as a campaign ad!

Since most states have to cast  votes for him by law, not allowing any changes at the convention, I expect him to bow out soon, maybe a convenient medical excuse!  But I hope not, he's an even weaker candidate than Dole was in 1996!

My wife drives an SUV, and I all I get to do is pay for the fucking thing!

I give him his propers for the Silver Star.

The Purple hearts, I don't know because for some reason he doesn't want to let anyone know how he earned them (that stinks like 3 day fish)

But if he was witnessing all of these atrosities in Vietnam, why did he wait until he was back to say anything. Not the kind of leadership I care to see in the White House...

In my opinion, if Bush had been in the same situation, he would not have shown the same courage.

There just isn't a whole lot of political capital to be made by attacking the manhood of a Silver Star winner.  The more Bush's supporters try to do it, the worse they make Bush look by comparison.

There's no doubt that Kerry showed physical courage in Vietnam. Nobody can deny that. The issue is the political opportunism he demonstrated upon his return.

I hardly think that anyone who actually was wondering whether to vote for Bush or for Kerry would pay much mind to the Village Voice.

You seek to minimize the courage Kerry showed.  I choose not to.
I have led many men through many life-threatening situations, and I happen to value what you call "physical courage".

I also know the look of a coward (although I try to turn that around and help them to find what courage they do have), and I am telling you flat out that George W. Bush is a coward.

You're trying too hard to find a disagreement with my post. I have never minimized Kerry's physical courage. I've had a taste of combat and know all too well the emotions involved. Riding for hours in a C-130 smelling the sweat, fear and apprehension of everyone around you. Jumping out at 500 ft. into a night sky lit-up with tracers, praying to God to just hit the ground in one piece. The popping sound of rounds going by your head from some asshole trying to kill you. Listening to the screams and stepping in the blood of wounded and dying men. Not very pleasant memories. John Kerry's courage in war is beyond question with me.
