All three are highly unlikely.

The only thing holding him back is he wants Ukraine somewhat Intact as buffer state between Russia and the west.

Mainly, it's simply wrong to suggest Ukraine has no connection to the NATO alliance. In fact, Ukraine has applied to join NATO, and NATO has said it may someday be admitted. And it's THIS that has Putin's panties in a bunch, along with wanting to restore a new version of the Warsaw Pact. So from that point of view it's possible to believe Ukraine is a sort of buffer between NATO and Russia; a sort of NATO member-in-waiting. Otherwise, why are we pouring arms into the country?
And I am not and never have been in favor of entering "the war on the side of the Ukrainians." We (and they) are doing pretty damn well so far with Stingers and Javelins.
Let's also keep in mind the Russian military has been exposed at pretty incompetent and Putin knows they are no match for NATO. It's also been quite a good lesson for the Chinese, whose very large military is based largely on stolen (and inferior) Russian designs. They would be wise not to test themselves against Taiwan and I think they know it.
