what will kill you if you suck it up is not CO2 but its cousin, CO, a/k/a Carbon Monoxide. So let's get our science straight, please. And I'm a Democrat.
Most of the exhaust from your car is in fact CO2. That is the function of the catalytic converter - it turns most of the CO caused by incomplete combustion of fuel into CO2. There is of course still some CO that comes out of the exhaust pipe and because of the very toxic effect of CO and its interaction with your blood chemistry, it does not take much to kill you. However, over concentrations of either compound will eventually kill you, so it's a matter of time and concentration not chemical difference between the two.
Interestingly, the advent of the catalytic converter back in the 70s or so was meant to be an environmental protection strategy. In fact, because it increases CO2 output, that is no longer the case.
